CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE — After coming agonisingly close to victory last year, South African long-distance runner Sboniso Sikhakhane has set his sights firmly on redemption as he prepares for the 2026 Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.

The Entsika Athletics Club standout finished second in the 2025 edition, clocking an impressive 3:11:18—just 31 seconds behind race winner Joseph Khoarahlane Seutloali. It is a near-miss that continues to fuel his determination as he targets a breakthrough victory on Saturday, 11 April.

A Painful Lesson, A Powerful Motivation

Reflecting on last year’s race, Sikhakhane admits the loss still lingers—but it has also sharpened his focus.

“I still believe I should have won,” he said, recalling a crucial moment late in the race when a tactical misstep cost him valuable time. “I made a mistake going for water where I shouldn’t have, and that gave my competitor the gap he needed.”

Rather than dwell on the setback, the 35-year-old has channelled that experience into motivation, describing it as a lesson that has strengthened both his mental resilience and race strategy.

Backed by Experience and Elite Coaching

Sikhakhane continues to train under the guidance of Hendrick Ramaala, the 2004 New York Marathon champion, whose expertise has been instrumental in refining his preparation.

His build-up to the Two Oceans has followed a familiar yet effective formula. He returned to the FNB Kazungula Marathon in Botswana—a race he credits for sharpening his readiness—where he delivered a strong 2:19:17 finish, significantly improving on his 2025 performance.

“I didn’t see a reason to change what worked,” he explained. “Kazungula gives me a clear indication of where I stand and what needs improvement. My goal was to run under 2:20, and I achieved that.”

Peak Form and Renewed Confidence

Sikhakhane believes he is entering the 2026 race in the best condition of his career—both physically and mentally.

“I’m in the best shape of my life. My body is responding well, and mentally I feel strong,” he said. “I’ve faced challenges over the past two years, but I’ve learned from them. Now I’m ready.”

His ambition is clear: not just to win, but to deliver a performance that surpasses his previous times on the demanding 56km route—widely regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging ultramarathons in the world.

A Contender to Watch

Race organisers have also highlighted Sikhakhane as a serious contender. Chris Goldschmidt, Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, praised his consistency and determination, noting that his near-victory last year positions him as a leading athlete to watch.

General Manager Wade Bromfield echoed this sentiment, emphasising that Sikhakhane’s journey embodies the spirit of the event—resilience, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

More Than Just a Race

The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, often referred to as “the world’s most beautiful marathon,” remains one of South Africa’s premier sporting events. The 2026 edition features a combined prize purse of R2.6 million, further raising the stakes for elite competitors.

With the Ultra Marathon set to begin at 05:15 on 11 April, all eyes will be on whether Sikhakhane can turn last year’s heartbreak into a defining career victory.

The Final Push

For Sikhakhane, this is more than just another race—it is a moment of truth.

“I’ve been knocking on the door for too long,” he said. “Winning would mean everything.”

As the countdown begins, one narrative stands out above the rest: a runner driven by unfinished business, chasing redemption on one of the biggest stages in South African road running.
