Cape Town, South Africa — The 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge has once again reaffirmed its status as one of South Africa’s premier youth football tournaments, with the opening day producing an exciting showcase of emerging talent and earning high praise from former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo.

“For me, the biggest takeaway has been the quality of the goalkeepers,” said Mhlongo. “The game has evolved so much, and young keepers today are being coached differently. They’re comfortable with the ball at their feet, they communicate well and make good decisions under pressure.”

“You can see these players have been well coached,” he said. “The goalkeepers are confident, they’re brave and they understand the demands of the modern game. This is exactly the kind of environment they need because it exposes them to high-pressure football and helps them grow.”
Held under the inspiring theme ‘Where Diski Legends Start,’ the Engen Knockout Challenge has built an enviable reputation as one of South African football’s most successful talent pipelines. Over the years, the tournament has produced numerous players who have progressed to the Premier Soccer League, represented Bafana Bafana and established successful professional careers both locally and abroad.
For Mhlongo, that legacy remains evident every time the tournament kicks off.
“You can already see players who have something special,” he said. “That’s what makes this tournament unique. It’s where young footballers get the chance to show what they’re capable of.”
