Roodepoort – A meticulously coordinated cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery unfolded in dramatic fashion yesterday, plunging parts of Roodepoort into chaos after heavily armed suspects ambushed an armoured cash vehicle, used explosives to breach it and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

The attack took place along Elias Motsoaledi Road, where a white Mercedes-Benz allegedly rammed the armoured van as it travelled under armed escort. Moments later, explosives were detonated to gain access to the cash compartment, while security guards were forcibly disarmed before the suspects made their escape.

Major Police Operation Activated

The incident triggered a swift and heavy response from SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police and specialised crime-fighting units, who cordoned off the affected stretch of road for several hours while forensic teams combed the scene for evidence. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area as authorities worked to stabilise the scene and reconstruct the sequence of events.

An Opel Corsa bakkie believed to be linked to the robbery was later found abandoned near the primary crime scene, raising suspicions that multiple vehicles had been deployed to facilitate the suspects’ escape.

Breakthrough in Soweto

Police efforts soon extended beyond Roodepoort after investigators identified a secondary location in Meadowlands, Soweto, where vehicles suspected to have been used in the heist were traced. At the address, officers recovered a white BMW and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie, both of which were confirmed to have been hijacked in previous incidents.

Two individuals — a man and a woman — were detained for questioning as police intensified their efforts to dismantle what is believed to be a well-organised criminal syndicate.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the Mercedes-Benz used in the initial attack was later torched, a tactic commonly used to destroy forensic evidence and complicate investigations.

Signs of a Highly Coordinated Syndicate

Early indicators point to a carefully planned operation involving surveillance, logistics coordination and multiple escape routes — hallmarks of sophisticated CIT syndicates operating across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

Although authorities have not yet confirmed the amount of money taken, officials have described the robbery as highly dangerous and indicative of escalating criminal boldness in the province.

Authorities Call for Public Assistance

A senior SAPS official involved in the investigation emphasised that the manhunt remains active.

“This was a calculated and extremely dangerous operation. We are following up on several leads and urge members of the public to share any information that could assist in bringing those responsible to justice,” the official said.

Growing Concerns Over Violent Crime

The incident has once again placed Roodepoort under the spotlight, amid ongoing concerns about violent organised crime, hijackings and armed robberies in the area. Security experts warn that repeated CIT attacks point to the urgent need for improved intelligence coordination and strengthened security protocols within the cash-handling sector.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are currently analysing CCTV footage, tracing the suspects’ movements and coordinating with law-enforcement units in neighbouring provinces. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.

Authorities have assured the public that updates will be released as developments unfold.
