The FNB’s flagship Pop Opera concert, in collaboration with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, returned thrillingly on Sunday, 17 August, under the starlit skies of Ballito. This year, the concert embraced the 2025 theme, “Echoes of Greatness,” captivating audiences with a powerful homage to African music’s sweeping journey from grassroots origins to global recognition.

Underpinning the evening’s success was the remarkable KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, which accompanied a stellar lineup of South Africa’s most illustrious artists. Together, they delivered breathtaking performances that celebrated the nation’s rich musical heritage while lighting the creative spark in the next generation. Nkosana Matyeshana, FNB’s Brand Experience Lead, articulated the spirit of the event: “True to our grassroots to greatness sponsorship strategy, this year’s FNB Pop Opera was about honouring our musical giants while amplifying the emerging voices shaping the future of African music. The energy, the artistry, and the connection between the performers and audience made this year’s concert truly unforgettable.”

Among the evening’s poignant highlights was a special tribute to the late Mam’ Abigail Kubheka, whose legendary contributions to music were vividly brought to life through a stirring live rendition of her beloved works, reminding the audience of the profound impact she had on the musical landscape.

Hosted by the charismatic Claire Mawisa, the concert showcased performances from an array of celebrated figures, including Abigail Kubheka, Ihashi Elimhlophe, Belinda Davids, Moneoa, J’Something, Sethabile Hlabangane, Magdeline Minnar, Katlego Maboe, and the Kearsney Boys Choir, all conducted by Chad Hendricks and guest conductor Ofentse Pitse.

But the impact of the evening extended well beyond the performances themselves. It reinforced FNB Pop Opera’s mission to unite the communities of KwaZulu-Natal and celebrate the transformative power of the arts. Matyeshana remarked, “KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa’s key economic hubs and a vibrant centre of creativity. This musical experience was not only a celebration of the region’s rich artistic talent; it was also a powerful contribution to the local creative economy. By blending pop classics, contemporary sounds, and opera, we showcased the passion, diversity, and community spirit that define KZN’s cultural heartbeat.”

The FNB Pop Opera concert stands as a testament to the enduring capacity of music to inspire, connect, and uplift. By firmly establishing itself as a cultural highlight in KwaZulu-Natal’s artistic landscape, the event has proven once again its invaluable role in promoting the vibrancy of local talent and culture.
