Johannesburg, South Africa — South Africa’s sneaker culture has officially entered its next chapter after Russian Bear and YFM launched King of Kicks 2026, unveiling the first look at a sneaker vault valued at R200,000 and setting the stage for one of the country’s most anticipated street-culture competitions.
Held in Johannesburg, the launch event brought together some of the nation’s most influential sneakerheads, fashion creators, musicians and culture tastemakers, all eager to get a glimpse inside what Russian Bear describes as this year’s legendary sneaker vault.
The campaign’s opening reveal showcased the first selection of coveted sneakers that will form part of the ultimate prize package. Rather than unveiling the full collection at once, Russian Bear confirmed that the vault will continue to expand throughout the campaign, with new additions revealed weekly ahead of the grand finale in October 2026.
The winner will unlock the fully stocked vault and be crowned King of Kicks 2026.
More than a sneaker competition
Over the years, King of Kicks has evolved from a simple contest into one of Russian Bear’s most prominent culture platforms, celebrating the connection between sneaker culture, music, fashion and street culture. The initiative has become known for spotlighting the communities and individuals who shape South Africa’s urban creative landscape.
Speaking at the launch, Siviwe Mgolodela, Senior Brand Manager for Russian Bear, said the campaign is designed to honor the people driving sneaker culture forward.
“King of Kicks has grown into much more than a competition. It has become a platform that celebrates creativity, individuality and the communities shaping sneaker culture in South Africa. This launch marks the beginning of another incredible journey, and we’re excited to reveal more of the vault each week as we build towards crowning this year’s King of Kicks,” he said.

A growing vault, growing anticipation
The gradual reveal strategy is expected to keep sneaker enthusiasts engaged over the coming months, with each new addition to the vault adding to the anticipation surrounding the October finale.
Industry observers note that the competition arrives at a time when sneaker culture in South Africa continues to experience significant growth, driven by the influence of global fashion trends, local streetwear brands, music culture and social media communities.
The launch event itself reflected that energy, blending fashion, music and sneaker culture into a single experience that offered attendees an early preview of what the 2026 campaign will deliver.
The road to the crown
With the first vault reveal now complete, the race to become South Africa’s next King of Kicks is officially underway.
Russian Bear and YFM have encouraged sneaker enthusiasts to follow their social media platforms for weekly sneaker reveals, competition updates, exclusive campaign content and giveaways as the vault continues to grow.
If the opening event is any indication, King of Kicks 2026 is poised to be more than just a competition — it is shaping up to be a celebration of the creativity, style and cultural influence that define South Africa’s thriving sneaker scene.
