Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, announced progress in stabilising the tense situation at Maponya Mall in Soweto following the shocking death of an e-hailing driver last week. In a bid to soothe community uproar and restore order, Diale-Tlabela visited the site on Thursday morning, demonstrating the provincial government’s commitment to addressing public transport safety concerns.
The tragedy occurred when 27-year-old Mthokozisi Mvelase was shot dead whilst stationed at what was reportedly a pickup point within the busy mall. Two other drivers suffered injuries during the violent incident, prompting an immediate backlash from the local community who subsequently blockaded all entrances to the mall. This blockade not only halted business operations but also escalated tensions between residents, taxi drivers, and e-hailing operators, who have increasingly been at odds in the area.
“We would like to reassure the people of Soweto and Gauteng that we now have things under control,” Diale-Tlabela said during her visit. “Calm has been restored, and the mall management has agreed to reopen.” Diale-Tlabela’s engagement with stakeholders, including management from Maponya Mall and local taxi organisations, highlights an effort to mend relations and develop a cohesive approach to transportation safety.
During her visit, the MEC underscored the need for law enforcement to be vigilant. “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that the community feels secure,” she stated. “Lawlessness will not be tolerated. Let’s allow business to continue and assist every member of the community in accessing the services they need.”
To further ensure safety, additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed to the area. This proactive measure aims to rebuild trust within the community and prevent future occurrences of violence that threaten both lives and livelihoods.
As Gauteng’s public transport sector grapples with a complex web of tensions, Diale-Tlabela’s visit serves as a reminder of the pressing need for dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders to foster a safer environment for all.
