JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) market could soon welcome an innovative new competitor, with Chinese manufacturer Solarky Mobility Technologies taking significant steps that suggest the country is firmly in its expansion plans.
While the company has not officially announced a South African launch, recent trademark applications and design registrations point to growing confidence in the country’s emerging EV sector and reinforce South Africa’s position as one of Africa’s most attractive automotive markets.
According to industry experts, Solarky’s latest legal filings indicate more than routine intellectual property protection—they reflect a strategic interest in establishing a foothold in the region.
The company, established in 2023, has built its reputation around what it describes as the world’s first mass-produced solar-powered electric vehicle, the sunV, an innovation designed to address one of the biggest challenges facing electric mobility: charging accessibility.
By securing trademark protection for the Solarky brand and local design rights for the sunV, the manufacturer appears to be laying the foundation for future commercial operations in South Africa.
Alan Quinn, Chief Product and Innovation Officer at Cars.co.za, believes the developments highlight the growing appeal of South Africa’s evolving EV landscape.
“South Africa’s EV landscape continues to evolve, and Solarky’s local trademark and design filings are another indication that global manufacturers are taking notice of the market. While an official launch has yet to be confirmed, the company’s activity suggests South Africa forms part of its broader African ambitions.”
The company’s broader strategy aligns with its stated commitment to expanding across Southeast Asia and Africa, where demand for affordable and sustainable mobility solutions continues to grow.
Solarky already has an established presence in Thailand, Indonesia and Tanzania, with South Africa listed among the countries where it has developed collaborations, further fuelling speculation that a local launch may be only a matter of time.
A Different Approach to Electric Mobility
Unlike conventional electric vehicles that rely exclusively on charging infrastructure, the sunV integrates solar technology directly into its design.
The compact four-seater is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 15 kW and 85 Nm of torque, supported by a 10.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capable of delivering a claimed 151-kilometre driving range under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
Its defining innovation, however, lies on the roof.
The vehicle features a 1.6-square-metre photovoltaic solar panel that can expand to 3.2 square metres, allowing the vehicle to harvest solar energy throughout the day. Under favourable weather conditions, Solarky claims the system can generate enough electricity to provide up to 50 kilometres of additional driving range daily, potentially reducing dependence on charging stations for shorter urban commutes.
The concept could prove particularly attractive in South Africa, where abundant sunshine presents a natural advantage for solar-powered mobility solutions.
Growing Confidence in South Africa’s EV Market
South Africa’s electric vehicle market remains relatively small compared with global leaders, but it is experiencing steady growth as consumers become more environmentally conscious, government policy gradually shifts towards cleaner mobility, and more international manufacturers enter the market.
Industry observers say Solarky’s interest reflects increasing international confidence in South Africa’s long-term EV potential.
The country’s improving charging infrastructure, expanding renewable energy sector and rising consumer awareness have made it an increasingly attractive destination for manufacturers looking to establish an African presence.
Although Solarky has yet to confirm dealership networks, pricing or launch dates, its trademark filings and design registrations suggest the company is taking practical steps towards entering the local market.
Should the launch materialise, the arrival of a solar-assisted electric vehicle could introduce a new dimension to South Africa’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape, offering motorists an innovative blend of renewable energy, lower operating costs and sustainable mobility.
