SINGER BERITA RETURNS WITH VIBRANT NEW SINGLE “Gugulethu” celebrating identity and resilience

Multi-award-winning artist Berita is back with her highly anticipated new single, “Gugulethu,” now streaming across all digital platforms. Named after her birth name, which translates to “our pride, our treasure,” the track stands as a vibrant Afropop anthem embracing themes of self-discovery, love, and cultural pride.

With its groovy production and soul-infused vocals, “Gugulethu” encapsulates Berita’s transformative journey from struggle to strength. The single is the result of collaborative efforts with notable producers George Brenner and Phillip Kwaku, while the songwriting prowess of Bongi Mantakana and Manu WorldStar also contributes to its artistic depth. In Berita’s words, “This is more than just a song — it’s a reclamation of identity,” highlighting its profound significance in her life. “It carried me through one of the hardest seasons of my life.”

The cover art of “Gugulethu” features Berita alongside her grandmother, a tribute to the matriarch who played an instrumental role in shaping her identity. “Her strength and love shaped who I am. Honouring her visually felt deeply right,” Berita reflects, showcasing the personal connection that permeates her music.

This release marks Berita’s first since 2020, signalling the dawn of a new chapter in her career. Now pursuing an MBA at GIBS, Berita is merging her creative aspirations with entrepreneurship, demonstrating her commitment to growth both personally and professionally. Recently, she impressively graced the stage at the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert and has an exciting performance lined up at the iconic Joy of Jazz Festival this September.

Since her breakout hit “Thandolwethu” in 2012 catapulted her to superstardom, Berita has built a legacy as a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter. Her discography boasts four critically acclaimed albums that blend Afro-soul, Afropop, and contemporary African sounds. Throughout her artistic journey, Berita has navigated complex themes of love, loss, resilience, and self-discovery, creating an emotionally rich soundtrack that resonates widely with her audience.

Her collaborations are a testimony to her versatility and respect within the industry, having worked alongside African music legends including Oliver Mtukudzi, Hugh Masekela, and Oskido, as well as contemporary icons such as Da Capo and Amanda Black. As a seasoned performer, she has captivated audiences at major festivals across Africa and beyond, including the All-Africa Festival in the UAE, Bayimba in Uganda, Lake of Stars in Malawi, the Jacaranda Music Festival in Zimbabwe, and most recently, the Mayibuye iAfrika Concert in South Africa.
