Johannesburg — The global spotlight turned to African storytelling at the Joburg Film Festival this week as acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker Bolanle Austen-Peters unveiled the first international look at her unreleased crime thriller Wire Wire. The screening took place on 4 March 2026, aligning with celebrations around International Women’s Day and highlighting the growing influence of women leading major productions across Africa’s film industry.

Directed by Austen-Peters and produced by BAP Productions, Wire Wire marks a bold shift in storytelling for the filmmaker known for stylish social dramas. This time, she dives deep into the gritty and high-stakes world of cybercrime, examining the realities of internet fraud and the pressures faced by young people navigating Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

A Dark Dive into Cybercrime

At the heart of Wire Wire is Toby, a gifted but financially struggling university graduate and software developer. His life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes entangled with a sophisticated network of online scammers operating within the shadows of the digital world.

As the group’s operations grow increasingly elaborate and dangerous, Toby finds himself wrestling with his conscience. When violence begins to creep into the syndicate’s activities, he secretly begins working with law enforcement in a risky attempt to dismantle the network from the inside — even as he plans what may be their final and most daring operation.

The story explores themes of ambition, desperation, morality and survival, offering a gripping reflection on the socio-economic realities confronting many young Africans in the digital age.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast

The film boasts an impressive lineup of some of Nigeria’s most recognisable screen talents. Among the cast are Lasisi Elenu, Bucci Franklin, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Bisola Aiyeola and Erica Nlewedim.

They are joined by an extensive ensemble that includes Neo Akpofure, Shaffy Bello, Jide Kosoko, Natacha Akide, Lilian Afegbai and Boma Akpore, among others.

Women Leading the Narrative

Speaking during the festival screening, Austen-Peters reflected on the significance of showcasing the film during the International Women’s Day period.

“International Women’s Day is a reminder that women are not just participating in the creative industry — we are building it,” she said. “With Wire Wire, we wanted to tell a story that reflects real pressures in our society today. It is bold, honest, and it proves that women can lead powerful storytelling in every genre.”

Austen-Peters has become one of the most influential female voices in Nigerian film and theatre through her work with BAP Productions, consistently delivering large-scale productions that travel beyond Nigeria to international audiences.

African Stories on Global Screens

The Joburg Film Festival screening marks the first international showcase of Wire Wire, positioning the film for broader global attention. The festival itself has grown into one of Africa’s premier cinematic gatherings, offering a platform for filmmakers across the continent to debut new work and connect with global distributors and audiences.

Following its festival premiere, Wire Wire is expected to secure a wider theatrical or streaming release later in 2026, further expanding the reach of Nigerian cinema.

With its gripping narrative, star-studded cast and socially relevant themes, Wire Wire signals another important step in the continued rise of African stories on the world stage — and a powerful reminder of the creative leadership shaping the continent’s film industry today. 🎬🌍
