Skukuza, Mpumalanga – After days of intense rainfall and widespread flooding that forced the temporary closure of several access points, Kruger National Park has confirmed the phased reopening of its southern gates, signalling a return to operational stability in one of South Africa’s most iconic conservation areas.

The reopening follows extensive safety assessments and recovery operations conducted by South African National Parks (SANParks) teams, who worked around the clock to evaluate infrastructure damage caused by the recent extreme weather conditions that affected large parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Flooding Causes Temporary Closures

Heavy rains earlier this month led to flooding of access roads, damage to low-lying bridges, and waterlogged tourist facilities across the southern region of the park. As a precautionary measure, SANParks closed several gates and camps to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and wildlife.

The flooding also impacted staff housing and operational areas, with some employees directly affected while continuing to assist with emergency response efforts.

Southern Gates Set to Reopen

SANParks has now confirmed that the southern gates — including Malelane, Crocodile Bridge and Numbi — will reopen to visitors, following structural inspections and essential repairs.

In a statement, park management said the decision to reopen was made after engineers confirmed that roads, bridges, and tourist facilities were safe for use.

“The safety of our guests and staff remains our top priority. After thorough assessments and clean-up operations, we are pleased to begin reopening the southern gates of Kruger National Park,” SANParks said.

Visitors are, however, advised that some internal roads may remain closed or accessible only via alternative routes, as rehabilitation work continues in affected areas.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

While the reopening marks a positive step forward, SANParks has cautioned that recovery efforts are still underway. Maintenance teams continue to clear debris, assess erosion damage, and restore infrastructure affected by the floods.

The park has also acknowledged the support received from emergency services, conservation partners and donors, including assistance provided to affected staff members and surrounding communities.

Tourism Operations Resume with Caution

Tourists planning visits are encouraged to:

  • Check gate and camp availability before travel
  • Follow park updates and road advisories
  • Allow extra travel time inside the park
  • Adhere strictly to safety instructions from park officials

Despite the recent challenges, SANParks says wildlife sightings remain excellent, and the landscape has benefited from the rainfall, bringing renewed greenery and improved grazing conditions.

A Step Toward Normalcy

The reopening of Kruger’s southern gates is a significant milestone in restoring tourism operations and economic activity in the region, particularly for surrounding communities that rely heavily on the park for employment and tourism revenue.

“As the park recovers, we remain committed to preserving this national treasure while ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all visitors,” SANParks said.
