Johannesburg, 16 January 2026 – First National Bank (FNB) has committed R3.7 million in humanitarian aid to support communities devastated by recent flooding across Limpopo and Mpumalanga, as parts of the country continue to reel from the impact of severe weather conditions.
The donation will be channelled through Gift of the Givers, one of South Africa’s most trusted disaster relief organisations, to ensure swift and effective assistance reaches affected families and frontline workers.
Communities Left Reeling After Devastating Floods
Since 12 January 2026, torrential rains have caused widespread flooding across several districts in the two provinces, resulting in extensive infrastructure damage, disrupted services and the displacement of thousands of residents. Tragically, lives have been lost, while many families have been left without shelter, food or basic household essentials.
The scale of the disaster has placed immense strain on local communities and emergency responders, prompting urgent intervention from both public and private sector partners.
Immediate Humanitarian Relief
FNB’s contribution will enable the rapid distribution of critical relief items, including:
- Blankets and mattresses
- Hot meals
- Hygiene packs
- Baby care essentials
A portion of the funding has also been earmarked to support SANParks staff, many of whom were directly affected by the floods while continuing to safeguard national parks and assist in emergency operations.
Standing with Communities in Crisis
Commenting on the initiative, Jacqui O’Sullivan, FNB Corporate Affairs Executive, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to community support during times of crisis.
“FNB is deeply rooted in South Africa’s communities, and we stand with those affected by this fierce flooding. Our contribution is aimed at addressing immediate humanitarian needs while helping families begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.”
She also acknowledged the vital role played by emergency responders and relief organisations.
“We thank Gift of the Givers for once again partnering with us to ensure aid reaches those who need it most, as quickly as possible. We also recognise the tireless efforts of emergency services and relief teams working under extremely challenging conditions.”
A Commitment Beyond Banking
The donation forms part of FNB’s broader commitment to social responsibility and disaster relief, reinforcing the role of the private sector in supporting national recovery efforts during times of crisis.
As communities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga begin the long road to recovery, partnerships between humanitarian organisations, government agencies and corporate citizens remain essential in restoring stability, dignity and hope to those affected.
