Johannesburg is set to pulse with energy and creativity as the Fête de la Musique returns to Victoria Yards on Saturday, 21 June 2025. This year, the festival marks its 14th edition, coinciding with significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s International Music Day and the 30th anniversary of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS). With free entry, this event is sure to be a highlight on the city’s cultural calendar.
Beginning at 1 PM and running until 7 PM, the festival will showcase over 20 acts selected from a pool of more than 300 applications by a distinguished jury of music experts from both South Africa and abroad. The star-studded line-up boasts renowned artists such as Sun-El Musician and Bongeziwe Mabandla, who both captivated audiences at the festival a decade ago and have since carved out illustrious careers in the music industry.
The full line-up also features up-and-coming talents including Akeeda, Jabulile Majola, Namhla Badela, Thabiso Thabete, and many others, alongside eclectic acts such as Afro Moment and KHNYSA, ensuring a diverse and rich musical experience for all attendees.
In keeping with the spirit of the original French concept launched in 1982, Fête de la Musique is dedicated to showcasing amateur musicians alongside established performers, creating an inclusive platform for everyone who loves music. Since its Johannesburg debut, the festival has become one of the most eagerly awaited cultural events in the city, recognised for its celebration of local talent, accessibility, and diversity.
“As we celebrate 30 years of IFAS in South Africa, we are proud to continue providing platforms like Fête de la Musique that support artistic expression and cultural exchange,” states Dorine Lebreton, Cultural Attaché and Deputy Director of IFAS. “This festival is not only a celebration of music but also a space where artists can grow, experiment, and connect with audiences in meaningful ways.”
Whether you’re a local music lover, a foodie looking for a vibrant atmosphere, or a family searching for a fun afternoon out, the Fête de la Musique promises to be an unforgettable celebration of artistry and community on the 21st of June. Come and join in the festivities and be a part of a rich cultural exchange!
