JOHANNESBURG – Africa is preparing to tee off a bold new chapter in its tourism economy following the official launch of the Africa Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) 2026, a continental initiative aimed at transforming the continent into one of the world’s premier golf tourism destinations.

Launched at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in the City of Ekurhuleni, the convention brings together leaders from government, tourism, business and the golf industry behind a shared vision: positioning Africa as a globally competitive golf tourism hub while unlocking investment, trade, business events and sustainable economic growth.

Scheduled to take place from 18 to 21 August 2026 in Gauteng, the inaugural convention is expected to attract tourism authorities, golf clubs, resorts, airlines, investors, destination marketing organisations, hospitality brands, policymakers and corporate leaders from across Africa and international markets.

A New Era for African Golf Tourism

Although Africa boasts some of the world’s most breathtaking golf courses, spectacular landscapes and diverse travel experiences, the continent remains significantly underrepresented in the rapidly expanding global golf tourism industry.

The Africa Golf Tourism Convention seeks to change that by creating a unified platform that showcases Africa not as individual destinations competing against one another, but as one interconnected tourism marketplace.

Founder and Convention Director Neo Peete believes the continent possesses everything needed to compete on the international stage.

“Africa has all the ingredients to become one of the world’s leading golf tourism destinations. AGTC creates a platform for governments, tourism boards, investors and the private sector to collectively showcase Africa’s diverse tourism offering. When Africa works together, we become far more competitive globally.”

More Than Golf

While golf remains the centrepiece, organisers say the convention is fundamentally about economic development.

Golf tourism is increasingly recognised as a high-value travel segment that generates significant visitor spending while stimulating hospitality, aviation, transport, retail, property development and local entrepreneurship.

The convention aims to create new investment opportunities while strengthening business relationships across the continent under the vision of a more integrated African tourism economy.

Its long-term legacy initiatives include:

  • The Hosted Buyer Programme
  • A continental Destination Showcase
  • The She Belongs Women’s Forum
  • The Caddie Ambassador & Youth Skills Development Programme

These programmes are designed to ensure that communities, young people, women entrepreneurs and emerging tourism businesses also benefit from Africa’s growing golf tourism industry.

Gauteng Positioned as Africa’s Business Events Capital

Hosting the inaugural AGTC further strengthens Gauteng’s reputation as Africa’s leading destination for international conferences and business events.

Nonnie Kubeka, Executive Director of the Gauteng Convention & Events Bureau, said the province is proud to host an event capable of creating lasting economic impact.

“Business events create lasting economic value by supporting local businesses, creating jobs and positioning destinations globally. We are proud that Gauteng will host the inaugural Africa Golf Tourism Convention, bringing together leaders from across the continent to collaborate, innovate and invest in Africa’s future.”

With world-class transport infrastructure, accommodation, conference facilities and international connectivity, Gauteng provides an ideal gateway for delegates travelling from across Africa and beyond.

Collaboration Key to Unlocking Africa’s Tourism Potential

Industry leaders at the launch emphasised that collaboration—not competition—will determine Africa’s future success in attracting international travellers.

Barba Gaoganediwe, Head of Destination Marketing and Communications at the Gauteng Tourism Authority, said African destinations stand to gain far more by marketing themselves collectively.

“No destination can unlock its full potential alone. By working together, destinations and industry partners can collectively market Africa, diversify tourism experiences and encourage travellers to explore more of our continent.”

The convention aligns closely with broader continental objectives under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by encouraging greater intra-African travel, stronger regional partnerships and increased cross-border investment.

Driving Investment Beyond the Fairways

One of the launch’s highlights was a high-level leadership discussion exploring “The Future of Golf Tourism in Africa: Positioning the Continent Through Tourism, Trade and Investment.”

Panellists highlighted golf tourism’s ability to stimulate investment across multiple sectors while creating opportunities for entrepreneurship, youth employment, women’s empowerment and destination competitiveness.

Delegates also received an exclusive preview of the inaugural convention programme, which will feature:

  • International keynote speakers
  • Destination showcases
  • Investment forums
  • Business-to-business meetings
  • Tourism exhibitions
  • Networking sessions
  • A Golf & Demonstration Day at Serengeti Estates

The programme has been designed to facilitate meaningful partnerships capable of generating long-term economic value across the continent.

One Marketplace, One Vision

As global tourism continues to recover and evolve, Africa has an opportunity to redefine how it presents itself to international markets.

Rather than promoting isolated destinations, the Africa Golf Tourism Convention champions a united continental brand built around collaboration, investment and shared prosperity.

Its message is simple yet ambitious:

One Continent. Many Fairways. One Marketplace.

If realised, that vision could not only elevate Africa’s position within the global golf tourism industry but also unlock new opportunities for investment, job creation and inclusive economic growth across the continent.
