PRETORIA, 11 August 2026 — Pretoria is preparing to trade daylight for neon as the countdown to the Sappi Tuks Night Race enters its final 30 days, with thousands of runners and walkers expected to descend on the University of Pretoria’s Hillcrest Sports Campus for an evening where sport, entertainment and campus energy collide.

Scheduled for 9 September 2026, the annual night race is positioning itself as more than a conventional road-running event. With illuminated routes, live entertainment, music, pump zones and a festival atmosphere, organisers are promising participants an experience designed to appeal equally to serious runners, recreational athletes and those simply looking for a night out with friends.

The event will feature 10km and 5km routes, giving participants the choice of chasing a personal best or enjoying the course at a more relaxed pace.

Race Director Jethro Moses says the event is designed around participation and community rather than elite performance alone.

“We want people to feel the energy of Tuks. This race is about community, fun and celebrating sport in a way that’s inclusive. You don’t have to be an elite athlete. You just have to show up, bring your energy and be part of something unforgettable.”

When the campus becomes a neon playground

The Sappi Tuks Night Race is expected to transform the Hillcrest Sports Campus and surrounding route into a vibrant night-time sporting spectacle.

Participants can expect neon-themed installations, entertainment points, DJs, music and hype zones positioned along the route, creating an atmosphere intended to keep runners energised from the starting line to the finish.

For many participants, however, the attraction will extend beyond the race itself.

The event promises food stalls, post-race entertainment and the distinctive atmosphere associated with the University of Pretoria campus — combining sport with what organisers describe as the “ultimate Tuks experience.”

The concept reflects a broader evolution in mass-participation running events, where the race is increasingly becoming part sporting challenge, part social gathering and part entertainment experience.

A race for runners and walkers alike

While competitive athletes will have the opportunity to test themselves over 10km, organisers are deliberately positioning the event as accessible to a much wider audience.

The 5km and 10km distances allow runners and walkers of different abilities to participate, reinforcing the event’s emphasis on inclusivity.

That approach is particularly significant for recreational participants who may not consider themselves traditional road runners but are increasingly drawn to events that combine fitness, social interaction and entertainment.

With the race taking place in the evening, the format also offers participants a distinctive alternative to traditional daytime road races.

Sappi backs community through sport

The event’s title partner, Sappi, says the partnership reflects its belief in the power of shared experiences to strengthen communities and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Michelle Le Roux, Public Relations and Marketing Lead at Sappi Southern Africa, said the company was pleased to partner with TuksSport once again.

“At Sappi we believe that strong communities are built through shared experiences that inspire people to connect and live active, healthy lives.”

She said the partnership with TuksSport would help deliver an event centred on participation, energy and community.

That philosophy aligns with the broader role sport can play in bringing people together while encouraging active and healthy lifestyles.

More than a race

At the heart of the event is TuksSport, the University of Pretoria’s sport department, which has established itself as a major force in South African sporting development.

With more than 30 sporting codes, TuksSport caters for a broad spectrum of participants — from beginners and recreational athletes to elite performers.

Its sporting programmes extend beyond competition, incorporating athlete development, coaching and a range of high-performance support services.

The Sappi Tuks Night Race provides another expression of that philosophy by opening the university’s sporting environment to a broad community of runners and walkers.

Countdown to race night

With only 30 days remaining, organisers are urging prospective participants to secure their places and prepare to experience Pretoria after dark from a different perspective.

The promise is simple: run the night, own the light and embrace the Tuks experience.
