Johannesburg, August 2026 — For thousands of South African students, graduating with a qualification is only the beginning of another daunting journey: finding a job, navigating the professional world and turning academic potential into meaningful opportunity.
The University Kick Start Roadshow is seeking to change that narrative with a nationwide career-readiness campaign that will reach more than 10,000 students at over 15 universities and colleges across South Africa during August and September 2026.
Founded by entrepreneur Boitumelo Motsepe, the initiative is designed around a simple but increasingly important premise: academic qualifications matter, but graduates also need practical tools, confidence and professional skills to compete effectively in the modern labour market.
From qualification to opportunity
The roadshow was developed in response to a challenge experienced by many young graduates — leaving tertiary education academically qualified, but uncertain about how to translate their knowledge and experience into employment opportunities.
Rather than positioning career preparation as something that only happens after graduation, Kick Start brings workplace readiness directly to students while they are still on campus.
The programme focuses on practical skills that can make a significant difference when students begin applying for internships, graduate programmes and permanent employment.
These include professional CV development, portfolio building, personal branding, networking, job application strategies, AI-powered career tools, professional communication and workplace etiquette.
“We want every student to leave our sessions knowing how to present themselves professionally, communicate their value, and compete confidently in today’s job market,” says Motsepe, Founder of the Kick Start Roadshow.
“Too many talented graduates leave university or college with potential, but not always with the confidence or practical knowledge to position themselves for opportunities. Kick Start exists to help students become opportunity-ready before graduation.”

Turning campus experience into career capital
One of the programme’s central messages is that students already possess valuable experience — they simply need to learn how to present it.
Academic assignments, research projects, leadership positions, volunteer activities, campus organisations and other university experiences can all become part of a compelling professional portfolio when properly positioned.
This approach encourages students to move beyond seeing themselves simply as job seekers and instead begin thinking about their personal value proposition.
The roadshow also introduces students to the growing role of artificial intelligence in career development, including tools that can support job searches, CV preparation and professional development.
Importantly, the programme places these technologies within a broader framework of human skills, professional judgement and authentic personal branding.
Bringing industry into the classroom
Unlike conventional career presentations, the University Kick Start Roadshow is structured as an interactive experience.
Students can participate in practical sessions, live demonstrations, competitions, giveaways and direct engagements with industry professionals and participating brands.
The involvement of organisations including Content Factory, Canderel and Volkswagen South Africa (VW SA) adds an important industry dimension to the programme, giving students an opportunity to engage with businesses and gain insight into what employers expect from emerging professionals.
For participating companies, the roadshow provides more than conventional brand exposure. It creates an opportunity to engage directly with a generation that will become the country’s future workforce, customers, entrepreneurs and business leaders.

A platform for meaningful corporate investment
The campaign is also opening its doors to strategic partners across sectors including financial services, automotive, telecommunications, FMCG, retail, technology, education and professional services.
Corporate participation can include campus activations, product sampling, career-focused engagement, skills development initiatives, graduate recruitment visibility and national media and digital exposure throughout the campaign.
This creates a potential intersection between youth development, talent identification and corporate social investment, allowing companies to contribute directly to preparing young South Africans for the workplace while building relationships with emerging talent.
Tackling the employability challenge
South Africa’s youth employment challenge continues to place enormous pressure on young people entering the labour market.
Against this backdrop, programmes that strengthen the transition between education and employment can play an important complementary role alongside formal qualifications, government interventions and private-sector recruitment initiatives.
The University Kick Start Roadshow’s approach is therefore focused not simply on helping students find jobs, but on helping them understand how the world of work operates and how they can position themselves within it.
From learning how to write a professional email to understanding how to build a personal brand, students are exposed to practical aspects of professional life that can often be overlooked in traditional academic environments.
Building a more opportunity-ready generation
At its heart, the University Kick Start Roadshow is about confidence.
A strong CV may open a door, but confidence can determine how a candidate performs in an interview. A qualification can demonstrate knowledge, but the ability to communicate that knowledge can determine whether an employer sees the potential behind it.
By connecting students with practical tools, industry professionals and corporate partners, the campaign aims to help young people approach the transition from campus to workplace with greater clarity and purpose.
The roadshow also highlights the importance of collaboration. Universities and colleges provide academic foundations, businesses understand evolving workplace requirements, and students bring the talent, ambition and potential that South Africa’s economy needs.
Bringing these three components together could help create a more effective pathway from education to employability.
Preparing students before graduation
As the University Kick Start Roadshow travels across campuses during August and September, its message is clear: career preparation should not begin after graduation.
It should begin while students are still studying — when there is time to develop skills, build networks, strengthen professional profiles and understand what employers are looking for.
For Motsepe and the team behind Kick Start, success will ultimately be measured by the confidence students take with them beyond the roadshow.
The ambition is to ensure that when the next generation of South African graduates steps through the university gates and into the employment market, they do so not only with a qualification, but with the tools to communicate their value, pursue opportunities and build careers.
The future of work is changing. Kick Start is helping students prepare to meet it.
