SA WOMEN AT FOREFRONT OF AVIATION AND CAREER SUCCESS AT EMIRATES

Women’s Month unfolded in spectacular fashion at Emirates Airlines, as the month dedicated to honoring the incredible achievements of women took flight by shining a spotlight on its 773 South African female employees who contribute daily to the success of the airline.

In an industry often dominated by male figures, Emirates reveals that within its ranks, women comprise a remarkable 59% of its South African workforce—a significant leap towards promoting gender equality. Of these talented individuals, 599 serve as cabin crew, while others assume vital roles in logistical management, legal affairs, finance, engineering, and even the cockpit, where 12 South African women pilot the airline’s aircraft.

Long-serving employees underscore the stability and dedication that these women bring to Emirates. Over 75 South African female staff members have been with the airline for more than a decade, with 34 hitting the 15-year mark, and 22 celebrating their 20th anniversary or more. Notably, the longest-serving South African female employee has contributed her expertise for close to 27 years, evidencing a steadfast commitment to excellence.

Women Taking Command

While statistics provide a compelling narrative of progress, the real measure of success lies in the experiences of these women navigating various facets of aviation. Take, for instance, Anele Ndlovu, an aircraft technician who relishes her role at Emirates Engineering. “Working as an aircraft technician at Emirates has given me many proud moments,” Ndlovu states. “Every completed job and safe departure feels like an achievement.”

Captain Chrystal Walker shares a similar sentiment as she pilots the world’s largest passenger jet at the busiest airports. “The opportunity to fly such a beautiful machine and have Emirates, the passengers, and the other crew trust you to do this safely still amazes me,” she says, highlighting the pride she takes in her work.

Emirates’ commitment to fostering a diverse and capable workforce is evident in its approach to promoting women in high-stakes roles like engineering, flight operations, and senior management. By placing individuals in roles based on merit, the airline continues to challenge the status quo, ensuring that talent leads the way.

Ammarah Bassa, a cabin crew member, resonates deeply with the significance of Women’s Month. “It’s a time to reflect on the strength, resilience, and courage of the women who came before us,” she expresses. Through her responsibilities, Bassa connects with countless individuals globally, embodying the empathy and pride inherited from her roots.

Additionally, women at Emirates are instrumental in shaping the airline’s future, ideating and implementing innovative solutions such as the cross-border delivery service. “Joining the Emirates Courier Express product team and contributing to the new service has been a highlight,” declares Chantelle Marsh, Cargo Product Development Controller at Emirates SkyCargo. “Seeing our ideas turn into real solutions that connect customers globally is incredibly rewarding.”

Cherishing Milestones and Dreaming of the Future

Women’s Month presents a pivotal opportunity to acknowledge milestones within aviation while recognising that work remains to be done. True change lies in empowering women to claim ownership of their careers—whether they’re flying, maintaining, or managing—but also, in celebrating their unique journeys.

The remarkable success of South African women at Emirates encapsulates the spirit of Women’s Month, building an aviation industry that values talent above all else. By sharing their diverse stories—from the cabin crew to engineering and beyond—the airline lays the groundwork for future generations to see aviation as an open realm of endless possibilities.
