ROAD TO SAMA 31 BEGINS WITH VIRTUAL NOMINEE ANNOUNCEMENT DURING WOMEN’S MONTH

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) is thrilled to launch the much-anticipated road to the 31st edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA). This year’s virtual nominee announcement is set for 28 August 2025, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward one of the country’s most esteemed accolades in music.

Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of RiSA, expressed the importance of the SAMAs, stating, “The SAMAs are not just about trophies – they’re about legacy, impact, and the stories we tell as a nation through music. In our 31st year, we remain committed to honouring the voices that shape our culture and the beats that move our people.” Since their inception in 1995, the SAMAs have served as a beacon of creative excellence, cultural pride, and national unity, recognising outstanding contributions to South African music.

The importance of these awards transcends recognition; they play a vital role in nurturing the creative economy. By honouring artistic excellence, they expand market access, foster social cohesion, preserve cultural identity, and spark national pride. Furthermore, the SAMAs contribute significantly to cultural tourism, presenting South Africa as a vibrant destination rich with a distinct artistic identity that resonates across the globe.

This year’s nominee announcement holds particular significance as it aligns with Women’s Month. Sibisi elaborated on this, noting, “Announcing SAMA 31 nominees during Women’s Month carries a resonance far deeper than a date on the calendar. It is a symbolic and strategic act – a celebration that aligns with a time dedicated to recognising the leadership, resilience, and achievements of women across all sectors.” The timing reinforces a commitment to honour women’s contributions to spaces where they have often been overlooked or undervalued and extends a message of empowerment to young girls and aspiring leaders.

As the virtual nominee unveiling approaches, it is essential to recognise that this event goes beyond mere procedure; it serves as a platform for ongoing advocacy for gender equity and representation in the arts. Sibisi reiterated, “it reminds us that recognition is not only about celebrating the past and present but inspiring the future.”

This year’s ceremony enjoys the prestigious sponsorship of the Motsepe Foundation, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, SAMPRA, SAMRO, CAPASSO, and media partnership with SABC. These collaborations are instrumental in broadening the scope of diversity and inclusivity across genres while supporting the overall growth of South Africa’s music ecosystem.

Sibisi also expressed gratitude to the esteemed panel of judges for their dedication and expertise, acknowledging their role in recognising the wealth of musical talent within the country. “We are deeply grateful to the esteemed judges for their time, expertise, and thoughtful consideration in selecting the nominees,” he concluded.

The virtual nominee announcement will be streamed live across SAMA social media platforms, providing fans and music industry stakeholders a unique insight into the artists, albums, and songs that have made an impact over the past year.

The climax of this journey will culminate in the main awards ceremony scheduled for November 2025, promising a night filled with unforgettable performances, emotional tributes, and moments that will undoubtedly define the history of South African music.
