Giyani – President Cyril Ramaphosa has visited Giyani in Limpopo following devastating floods that displaced families, damaged infrastructure and disrupted essential services across the area.
The visit formed part of government’s ongoing response to the recent heavy rainfall that severely affected several communities, leaving homes submerged, roads washed away and critical public facilities damaged. During the visit, the President engaged directly with affected residents and received on-the-ground briefings from disaster management teams coordinating relief and recovery operations.
Assessing Damage First-Hand
Ramaphosa toured some of the hardest-hit areas to assess the extent of the destruction and evaluate the effectiveness of emergency interventions. He was accompanied by national, provincial and local government officials, including disaster management authorities responsible for coordinating humanitarian assistance.
The President acknowledged the hardship faced by residents and emphasised government’s commitment to ensuring that no affected families are left without support.
Government Response and Relief Measures
Relief efforts currently underway include the provision of temporary shelter, food parcels, clean drinking water and medical assistance. Psychosocial support services have also been deployed to assist families traumatised by the flooding.
Infrastructure teams have been tasked with assessing damage to roads, bridges, schools and clinics, while plans are being developed to prioritise urgent repairs and longer-term rebuilding.
Focus on Climate Resilience
During his engagement with local leaders, Ramaphosa highlighted the growing threat posed by extreme weather events and the need to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate-resilient infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable and flood-prone areas.
He stressed the importance of coordinated planning between government spheres to improve early-warning systems, drainage capacity and settlement planning to reduce future risks.
Community Engagement
The President also met with traditional leaders and municipal officials to discuss immediate needs and long-term recovery strategies. Community representatives raised concerns around housing, infrastructure resilience and disaster mitigation measures.
Ramaphosa assured residents that government would continue to work closely with local authorities to support recovery efforts and to implement sustainable solutions aimed at protecting communities from future disasters.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts in Giyani are ongoing, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
