JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s next generation of football stars announced themselves in spectacular fashion as the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge Johannesburg got underway at Wits Marks Park Stadium on Friday, delivering a day packed with quality football, dramatic results and standout individual performances.
Living up to the tournament’s enduring theme, “Where Diski Legends Start,” the opening day showcased why the Engen Knockout Challenge remains one of the country’s premier youth football development platforms, with aspiring stars battling for early dominance in the group stages.
Among the biggest talking points was an impressive start by Kaizer Chiefs, whose Under-18 side, guided by club legend David Mathebula, produced two commanding victories to take control of Group A.
Chiefs opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DBK Football Stars before producing one of the performances of the day, dismantling Wits University 5-0 to finish the opening round at the top of their group.
They now face an eagerly anticipated showdown against Kathorus Hyper Academy, who also maintained a perfect record after winning both of their opening fixtures. The encounter is expected to determine Group A supremacy and one of the most coveted quarter-final places.
Group B is equally finely balanced, with Mamelodi Sundowns leading the standings on four points after a solid opening day’s work.
Defending 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge champions Panorama FC remain firmly in contention despite occupying third position with two points, leaving the group wide open heading into Saturday’s decisive fixtures.

The Under-20 girls’ competition also produced exceptional football, with Blue Birds Ladies and Mamelodi XI Stars emerging as the teams to beat.
Both sides delivered flawless performances, winning all of their opening matches to collect the maximum six points and establish themselves as early favourites for the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, defending champions University of Johannesburg demonstrated their resilience by collecting four points from their opening two matches.
UJ secured victory over Rosina Sedibane before battling to an impressive draw against tournament heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns FC, leaving the title holders well positioned to advance to the quarter-finals.
With every point carrying enormous significance, Saturday’s final group-stage fixtures promise high-intensity football as clubs battle for the remaining places in the knockout rounds.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, 19 July, when Johannesburg’s finest young footballers compete for the prestigious 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge Johannesburg titles.
