Defending champion Joseph Seutloali has every reason to return to Cape Town with sharpened intent in April 2026.
After claiming victory in the 2025 Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon and pocketing R250 000, the Lesotho Olympian now stands on the brink of a significantly richer prize should he defend his crown on Saturday, 11 April 2026. The winner’s cheque has been increased to R380 000 as part of a sweeping enhancement to the race’s elite incentives.
Organisers recently confirmed that the 2026 edition will feature a combined prize purse of R2.6 million, reinforcing the event’s status as one of Africa’s most prestigious road races.
A Statement of Growth
Seutloali, who represented Lesotho at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, praised the decision, describing it as a progressive and necessary evolution for elite competition.
“I’m very pleased that Two Oceans has increased the prize money, which has remained at R250 000 for several years,” he said.
“This is positive not only for the top athletes competing for the prize money, but also for up-and-coming athletes who will now be motivated to perform at a higher level. It shows that the race is growing. As events grow, the competition becomes stronger — and that is what elite sport is about.”
For Seutloali, the increased incentive is not merely financial — it is competitive. A deeper purse attracts deeper fields. And deeper fields demand faster times.

Breaking Down the Numbers
The 2026 prize allocation is structured as follows:
- Ultra Marathon Prize Pool: R2 177 400
- Half Marathon Prize Pool: R422 600
- Combined Total: R2.6 million
The enhanced earnings signal the organisers’ intent to elevate the calibre of participation across both the Ultra and Half Marathon distances.
Chris Goldschmidt, Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, framed the increase as part of a broader commitment to excellence.
“Greater prize incentives naturally elevate the level of competition, motivating elite athletes to push boundaries and deliver exceptional performances. That is what makes events like the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon so special — constant growth and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.”
A Target on the Champion’s Back
Wade Bromfield, General Manager of the race, made it clear that Seutloali will not have an easy defence.
“We are pleased that Joseph Seutloali will return in 2026 and look forward to welcoming more elite contenders to the starting line to ensure he faces strong competition and an exciting challenge in defending his title.”
The message is clear: the 2026 edition will not simply be about defending a title — it will be about surviving a stronger, deeper and more motivated field.
2026 Event Schedule
The race weekend unfolds as follows:
- Friday, 10 April 2026: Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon Trail Run
- Saturday, 11 April 2026: Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon
- Sunday, 12 April 2026: Totalsports Two Oceans Half Marathon
With prize money increased, prestige intact and elite ambitions ignited, the 2026 Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon is shaping into a high-stakes showdown along one of the world’s most scenic — and punishing — routes.
For Joseph Seutloali, the equation is simple: return stronger, defend the crown, and claim a significantly richer reward.
For the chasing pack, the message is even clearer — the champion will not run alone.
