JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) market has reached a defining moment with the arrival of the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf, two compact electric hatchbacks that are making zero-emission motoring more accessible than ever before.
Breaking through the long-standing price barrier that has confined EVs to the premium segment, both vehicles enter the market at under R400,000, signalling a major shift towards mainstream electric mobility for South African motorists.
For years, affordability has been one of the biggest obstacles preventing widespread EV adoption. The launch of these two models changes that narrative by offering practical, technology-rich alternatives aimed at urban commuters, young professionals, small families and buyers looking for an economical second vehicle.
According to Alan Quinn, Chief Product and Innovation Officer at Cars.co.za, the introduction of these models represents a significant milestone for the local automotive industry.

Two Different Approaches to Affordable Electric Mobility
Although positioned within the same price bracket, the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf cater to slightly different driving priorities.
The Geely E2 Apex, priced at R389,900, places greater emphasis on practicality, comfort and advanced technology. It offers a more spacious cabin, a larger luggage compartment and versatile 60/40 split-folding rear seats, making it a compelling choice for families and motorists seeking everyday convenience.
The E2 also arrives equipped with an extensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision avoidance and a suite of intelligent safety technologies typically associated with more expensive vehicles.
The BYD Dolphin Surf Dynamic, retailing at R395,900, adopts a more compact and youthful approach. Designed primarily for city living, it combines modern styling with nimble handling, making it ideal for navigating congested urban environments and tight parking spaces.
While its smaller footprint enhances manoeuvrability, the Dolphin Surf sacrifices some practicality with a smaller luggage compartment, a one-piece folding rear bench and a firmer suspension setup.
Geely Takes the Performance Lead
Performance is another area where the Geely E2 establishes an advantage.
Powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 85kW and 150Nm of torque, the E2 delivers stronger acceleration and greater confidence during highway overtaking.
The BYD Dolphin Surf, meanwhile, features a 55kW front-mounted electric motor generating 135Nm, providing smooth and efficient performance that remains well suited to daily commuting.
Both vehicles, however, excel where electric mobility matters most—efficiency.
With energy consumption ranging between 11.0 and 12.5kWh per 100 kilometres, owners can expect operating costs of approximately R36 per 100km based on current electricity prices, offering substantial savings compared with traditional petrol-powered vehicles.
Charging Made Easier
Recognising that charging convenience remains critical to EV ownership, both manufacturers include a complimentary 7kW AC home wallbox charger with each vehicle.
The system allows batteries to recharge from 10% to 80% in under three hours, making overnight or home charging both practical and convenient for everyday use.
A New Chapter for South Africa’s EV Market
The arrival of the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf reflects the rapid evolution of South Africa’s automotive landscape as manufacturers increasingly target affordability alongside sustainability.
While the BYD Dolphin Surf impresses with its stylish design and city-focused agility, the Geely E2 distinguishes itself through superior interior space, stronger performance, enhanced practicality and a more comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies.
More importantly, both vehicles demonstrate that electric mobility is no longer reserved for luxury buyers.
As infrastructure continues to expand and consumer confidence in EV technology grows, the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf could prove to be the models that finally bring affordable electric motoring into the South African mainstream.
