JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – First National Bank (FNB) has enhanced its banking services for international travellers by introducing Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) across its nationwide ATM network, allowing foreign cardholders to view the value of their cash withdrawals in their home currency before completing a transaction.
The new service, launched in partnership with global financial technology company Fexco, builds on a feature already available to international visitors making purchases at retailers, restaurants and businesses through FNB’s Speedpoint payment terminals.
The latest rollout extends the same convenience to cash withdrawals, providing overseas visitors with greater transparency, flexibility and confidence when accessing cash while travelling in South Africa.
Enhancing the Banking Experience for International Visitors
As one of South Africa’s largest banking institutions with an extensive self-service network, FNB says the enhancement forms part of its ongoing investment in digital banking solutions that simplify financial transactions while improving the overall customer experience.
Dynamic Currency Conversion enables international cardholders to immediately see the equivalent value of their ATM withdrawal in their home currency before confirming the transaction. Customers are then given the choice of completing the withdrawal either in their home currency or in South African rand.
The feature is designed to help travellers make informed financial decisions by providing greater clarity on the value of each transaction.
Greater Transparency and Choice
According to John Mlangeni, Chief Executive Officer of Merchant Services at FNB, today’s international travellers increasingly expect banking services that combine convenience with transparency.
“International visitors want convenient access to cash and greater certainty when managing their money while travelling,” said Mlangeni.
“This enhancement helps customers better understand the value of a transaction before making a decision, while benefiting from the scale and accessibility of FNB’s network.”
He added that the bank remains focused on removing unnecessary complexity from everyday banking.
“At FNB, we continuously look for opportunities to remove friction from everyday banking experiences. Whether customers are making purchases, withdrawing cash or managing their finances while travelling, our focus is on providing simple, transparent and accessible solutions that make it easier for customers to manage their money.”
Mlangeni noted that extending a service already available through merchant payments to ATM withdrawals creates a more seamless banking experience across multiple channels.
Strengthening a Longstanding Partnership
The rollout also reinforces the long-established collaboration between FNB and Fexco, a global financial services and payments technology provider specialising in international payment solutions.
Sean Crowe, Chief Executive Officer of Fexco Financial Services, welcomed the expansion of the partnership, saying it represents another milestone in improving banking services for international visitors.
“We are pleased to extend our longstanding relationship with FNB through this rollout,” said Crowe.
“By bringing this capability to FNB’s ATM network, we are helping to create a more consistent experience for international cardholders travelling throughout South Africa.”
Supporting South Africa’s Tourism Economy
The introduction of Dynamic Currency Conversion at FNB ATMs is expected to benefit thousands of international visitors who rely on convenient access to cash while travelling for business or leisure.
By providing immediate visibility of withdrawal values in familiar currencies, the service reduces uncertainty around exchange rates and empowers travellers to make informed choices based on their individual preferences.
The enhancement also aligns with broader efforts to improve South Africa’s financial infrastructure and visitor experience, particularly as the country continues to attract growing numbers of international tourists and business travellers.
Nationwide Rollout Complete
FNB confirmed that the service has now been rolled out across its extensive ATM network nationwide, ensuring international cardholders can access the feature at thousands of locations throughout South Africa.
The bank believes the initiative further strengthens its commitment to innovation, customer-centric banking and the delivery of secure, convenient financial services tailored to the evolving needs of both local and international customers.
As global travel continues to recover and international tourism gathers momentum, FNB’s latest innovation positions the bank at the forefront of delivering smarter, more transparent banking solutions for visitors exploring South Africa.
