JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG — As the Easter holidays approach and airports brace for a surge in passenger traffic, FlySafair is urging travellers to plan ahead—particularly when it comes to packing and travelling with everyday technology.
From smartphones and laptops to power banks and cameras, modern travel is increasingly defined by the devices passengers carry. According to FlySafair, a few simple adjustments can make the difference between a stressful airport experience and a seamless journey.
Preparing for Peak Travel
With school holidays coinciding with Easter, airports across South Africa are expected to experience high volumes of travellers. FlySafair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kirby Gordon, emphasised that preparation is key.
“Most travel disruptions can be avoided with simple planning,” he said. “Keeping essentials close, understanding basic rules, and packing efficiently helps passengers move through the airport faster and more comfortably.”
Five Essential Tech Travel Tips
To help passengers navigate the busy travel period, FlySafair has outlined five practical tips:
1. Keep Essentials in Your Carry-On
Travellers are advised to pack all important items—such as devices, chargers, medication, and travel documents—in their cabin bags. This ensures easy access and prevents complications if luggage is checked in at the last minute.
2. Simplify Security Screening
Organising electronics for easy access can significantly reduce delays at security checkpoints. Devices should be placed in accessible compartments and removed when required for screening.
3. Pre-Book Luggage Online
Adding checked baggage in advance through online booking platforms not only saves time but can also reduce costs, easing congestion at airport counters.
4. Protect and Organise Devices
Using cable organisers and protective sleeves helps prevent damage and speeds up repacking after security checks.
5. Check Carry-On Limits
Passengers are reminded to confirm size and weight restrictions for cabin baggage to avoid last-minute inconvenience at boarding gates.
Understanding Power Bank Regulations
A key focus of FlySafair’s advisory is the correct handling of power banks and lithium-ion batteries—an area where many travellers are often caught off guard.
Due to international aviation safety regulations:
- Power banks must always be carried in cabin baggage
- Batteries under 100Wh are generally permitted without approval
- Batteries between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval
- Batteries exceeding 160Wh are strictly prohibited on passenger aircraft
Passengers are also reminded to remove power banks from carry-on bags if those bags are placed in the aircraft hold at boarding.
Safety First in the Skies
These rules are rooted in safety considerations. In rare cases where lithium-ion batteries malfunction, cabin crew are equipped to respond quickly. However, such incidents are far more difficult to manage in the aircraft’s cargo hold, making proper handling essential.
A Smoother Travel Experience
FlySafair’s guidance reflects a broader effort to improve passenger flow and reduce delays during peak travel periods. By encouraging proactive planning, the airline aims to create a more efficient and stress-free airport experience for all travellers.
“The more prepared passengers are, the smoother the journey becomes—not just for themselves, but for everyone around them,” Gordon added.
Travel Smart This Easter
As holidaymakers prepare to take to the skies, FlySafair’s message is clear: smart packing and a basic understanding of travel regulations can transform the airport experience.
In an era where technology is an essential travel companion, knowing how to carry it safely and efficiently is no longer optional—it’s essential.
