JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s future spin bowling stars are set to receive world-class coaching and mentorship following the launch of the Engen Xtreme Young Spinners Programme, a groundbreaking youth development initiative designed to nurture the country’s next generation of cricket talent.
Developed in partnership with Cricket South Africa’s Tuskers Inland and Coastal unions, the programme aims to identify, mentor and develop promising spin bowlers in the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 age groups through a comprehensive high-performance training pathway.
Initially launching in KwaZulu-Natal, the programme will support 36 young cricketers in its inaugural intake, with plans to expand nationally in the coming years.

Investing in Tomorrow’s Cricket Heroes
The initiative places two of South Africa’s most accomplished spin bowlers at the heart of its coaching philosophy.
Former Proteas stars Tabraiz Shamsi and Paul Adams will serve as mentors, sharing the knowledge, experience and resilience gained throughout distinguished careers on both the domestic and international stage.
Beyond refining bowling techniques, the pair will mentor participants on leadership, discipline, mental resilience and the mindset required to compete at the highest level of the sport.
As part of the programme’s official launch, Adams will also present players with branded cricket uniforms, symbolising the beginning of their development journey.

Building Excellence On and Off the Field
Running from July to November 2026, the Young Spinners Programme combines quarterly in-person high-performance camps with ongoing virtual mentoring sessions to ensure continuous development throughout the season.
The curriculum has been designed to produce well-rounded athletes by focusing on technical spin bowling skills, tactical awareness, match preparation, fitness, mental conditioning and personal development.
Rather than simply producing better bowlers, the programme aims to shape confident, disciplined young leaders capable of thriving both on and off the cricket field.
Inspired by High Performance

The collaboration aims to strengthen the long-term development pathway for specialist spin bowlers—a discipline that has produced some of South Africa’s finest cricketers but often requires dedicated coaching and specialised support from an early age.
With structured development, elite mentorship and access to professional coaching, the programme is expected to play a significant role in preparing future provincial and national representatives.
