A gruelling 1 749 kilometres. Eight consecutive days in the saddle. One unified purpose.

The 23rd edition of the Route of the African Sun Charity Cycle Tour has set off from the iconic Sun City Resort on 26 February 2026, with nine dedicated cyclists embarking on an extraordinary endurance journey that will culminate at the V&A Waterfront on 5 March 2026 — just days before the internationally renowned Cape Town Cycle Tour on 8 March.

But this is no race.

It is a team-based endurance challenge, built on unity, resilience and a shared commitment to uplifting vulnerable children across South Africa.

Riding for Impact, Not Podiums

The Route of the African Sun is defined by a simple but powerful principle: no rider is left behind. All participants complete the full 1 749km together, riding standard bicycles — no e-bikes permitted — reinforcing camaraderie, discipline and collective endurance.

Over eight demanding days, the cyclists will push their physical limits while navigating diverse terrain that stretches from the North West through the Karoo and onward to the Western Cape. Along the way, they are supported by a specialised crew of medics, media personnel and technical experts, ensuring safety and logistical precision throughout the journey.

Cycling as a Catalyst for Change

At the heart of the tour lies a clear mission: raising funds for destitute children. Proceeds from the event are directed toward initiatives that provide mobility, access and opportunity for young people in vulnerable communities.

In partnership with Sun City and the Charity Cycle Club, funds raised during the tour will be used to purchase bicycles for beneficiaries nominated by Sun City. These bicycles serve not only as tools for transport, but as instruments of empowerment — promoting healthier lifestyles, increasing mobility and easing daily travel challenges.

In 2025, the initiative raised approximately R130 000, resulting in the donation of 15 bicycles to seven local primary schools. The bicycles were allocated to general workers, significantly improving their daily commuting conditions and accessibility.

Khanyisile Makhubalo, Acting Socio-Economic Development and Stakeholder Engagement Manager at Sun City, underscores the broader vision: the initiative extends beyond sport, reinforcing Sun City’s long-term commitment to sustainable community development and social impact.

A Tradition of Perseverance

Event organiser Johann Maré highlights the enduring spirit of the tour, which continues to attract cyclists from across the globe. Now in its 23rd year, the event blends athletic endurance with meaningful philanthropy — a combination that has sustained its relevance for more than two decades.

Among the 2025 participants was Ernest Horn of Bloemfontein, who completed the tour for the 16th time at the age of 70. Reflecting on the experience, Horn described it as a test of perseverance — “vasbyt” — riding through shifting winds, unpredictable weather and vast landscapes, while drawing strength from team solidarity and community support.

His sentiment captures the essence of the tour: resilience forged not only through physical endurance, but through purpose.

Beyond the Finish Line

As the cyclists make their way toward Cape Town, the true measure of success will not be the kilometres conquered, but the lives impacted.

The Route of the African Sun Charity Cycle Tour continues to demonstrate how sport, when anchored in intention, can transcend competition — becoming a vehicle for hope, mobility and opportunity for those who need it most.
