JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng police have launched a massive manhunt after at least 12 people were killed and nine others wounded in a coordinated mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, in one of the deadliest attacks to hit the province this year.

The attack unfolded shortly after 11pm on Tuesday night when a group of heavily armed suspects descended on the settlement and opened fire on residents across multiple locations before fleeing the scene.

According to preliminary police investigations, more than ten suspects were allegedly transported to the area in a white Toyota Quantum. The group reportedly entered the settlement through two separate access points, moving through the community while indiscriminately firing at residents before escaping in the same vehicle.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they were met with a devastating picture of carnage, with multiple victims lying wounded and others already deceased.

Emergency Medical Services rushed to the settlement and began treating survivors while transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

Police confirmed that eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene. A twelfth victim later succumbed to injuries in hospital. At least nine other victims remain under medical care after sustaining gunshot wounds.

Community Left Traumatised

Residents of the settlement woke up on Wednesday morning to scenes of grief and disbelief as investigators combed through the area collecting evidence.

The attack has sent shockwaves through communities across Johannesburg, particularly among residents of informal settlements who already face numerous social and economic challenges.

For many residents, the incident represents more than another crime statistic. It is a stark reminder of the vulnerability experienced by communities living in densely populated settlements where limited infrastructure, poverty and criminal activity often intersect.

Families gathered near the crime scene as forensic teams worked through the night and into the morning, attempting to piece together the sequence of events that led to the massacre.

Police Launch Intensive Investigation

Provincial detectives, crime intelligence officers and forensic experts have been deployed to investigate the attack and identify those responsible. Authorities have confirmed that no arrests have yet been made.

Police spokespersons have indicated that determining the motive behind the killings remains a priority.

“The motive for the attack is currently unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,” police said.

Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage from nearby businesses, interview witnesses and trace the movements of the white Toyota Quantum believed to have been used during the operation.

The level of coordination displayed by the attackers has raised serious concerns among law enforcement officials. The fact that the gunmen allegedly entered from multiple access points and targeted several locations suggests a planned operation rather than a spontaneous act of violence.

Questions Over Organised Crime Links

Although police have not officially linked the shooting to any criminal network, Cleveland and surrounding areas have long been associated with various forms of organised criminal activity, including illegal mining operations.

Security analysts note that parts of Johannesburg’s eastern corridor have experienced periodic violence linked to criminal syndicates, territorial disputes and illicit economic activities. However, authorities have stressed that it would be premature to draw conclusions until investigations are completed.

The possibility of organised criminal involvement is likely to form part of ongoing investigations as police work to establish the motive behind the attack.

South Africa’s Ongoing Battle Against Violent Crime

The Cleveland massacre once again places the spotlight on South Africa’s persistent struggle with violent crime and gun violence.

Mass shootings continue to pose a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies, particularly in densely populated urban areas where criminal networks often operate alongside vulnerable communities.

The latest tragedy has reignited calls for stronger intelligence-led policing, greater community safety interventions and intensified efforts to dismantle organised criminal groups operating across Gauteng.

As investigators continue their work, families of the victims now face the painful task of identifying loved ones and preparing for funerals while searching for answers.

For the residents of Jumpers Informal Settlement, the events of Tuesday night will leave scars long after police tape is removed and forensic teams depart.

What remains is a grieving community demanding justice, a city once again confronting the realities of violent crime, and a nation waiting for answers about who carried out one of Johannesburg’s deadliest mass shootings of 2026 and why.
