South Africa’s beloved community movement, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, is set to celebrate the spirit of creativity, compassion and collective action this April, as it hosts vibrant gatherings across the country in honour of World Creativity and Innovation Day.

Taking place on 18 April 2026, the initiative will bring together knitters, crocheters, families and volunteers in a shared mission: transforming simple acts of creativity into tangible warmth and dignity for vulnerable communities.

A Nationwide Celebration of Creativity and Kindness

At the heart of the celebrations is a flagship Family Day Out in Johannesburg, hosted at the scenic City Centre at Steyn City. The event promises a colourful and immersive experience, featuring blanket displays, creative activities and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the movement’s enduring ethos of unity and generosity.

Simultaneously, events will unfold across Cape Town, Durban, White River and Gqeberha—underscoring the national footprint of a movement that continues to connect communities through shared purpose.

Participants are encouraged to bring their knitting needles, crochet hooks and yarn, joining hundreds of fellow volunteers in crafting blankets that will ultimately be distributed to those in need.

Leadership Transition Signals Growth

The celebrations also mark a significant leadership transition within the organisation. Founder Carolyn Steyn will remain actively involved at an executive level, while Annie Robinson Grealy steps into a key operational leadership role.

Steyn, who established the movement in 2013, emphasised that the transition is designed to strengthen the organisation’s growth while preserving its founding values of compassion and community.

Robinson Grealy, in turn, highlighted her commitment to supporting the movement’s extensive network of volunteers and ambassadors—individuals whose dedication has been central to its success.

From Humble Beginnings to National Impact

What began as a modest initiative has evolved into a powerful nationwide movement. Over the years, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has mobilised thousands of South Africans to knit and crochet blankets, which are distributed to hospitals, shelters, schools and underserved communities.

Beyond the physical warmth provided, the initiative has fostered meaningful human connections—bridging divides and bringing together people from diverse backgrounds through a shared act of kindness.

Open Invitation to All

The upcoming gatherings are designed to be inclusive and accessible, welcoming everyone from seasoned crafters to curious beginners. Families, friends and individuals are invited to participate, learn new skills, share stories and contribute to a cause that continues to uplift communities across the country.

From picnic-style meetups to creative showcases and community installations, each event offers a unique way to experience the heart of the 67 Blankets movement.
