JOHANNESBURG, 20 October 2026 — The excitement surrounding the start of the 2026–27 National Basketball Association (NBA) season has arrived in South Africa, with the league bringing its NBA Fan Box activation to Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, transforming the popular destination into an immersive basketball experience for fans.

Open through opening night on Tuesday, 20 October, the activation offers basketball enthusiasts an opportunity to celebrate their favourite teams and players through interactive shooting challenges, gaming experiences and retro merchandise, bringing the energy and culture of the NBA closer to local supporters.

The initiative forms part of the league’s broader effort to engage its growing African fan base, connecting supporters through the sport’s unique combination of athletic excellence, entertainment and community.

Bringing NBA culture closer to South African fans

The NBA Fan Box provides a platform for fans to showcase their team loyalty, test their basketball skills and immerse themselves in the excitement of the new season.

With the activation taking place at Nelson Mandela Square, the league is bringing basketball culture into one of Johannesburg’s prominent public destinations, creating an opportunity for existing supporters and newcomers alike to engage with the sport.

Zeph Masote, Head of NBA South Africa, said the start of the season presents an important opportunity to bring the country’s basketball community together.

“Basketball culture continues to grow in South Africa, and the start of the NBA season is a great opportunity to bring that community together,” said Masote.

“We’re excited to welcome fans to Nelson Mandela Square to celebrate their favourite teams and players, connect with other fans and experience the excitement of NBA Tip-Off.”

A compelling new season for basketball fans

The 2026–27 season promises a compelling mix of established superstars, emerging talent and teams looking to strengthen their championship credentials.

For African audiences, access to live action remains a key part of the NBA’s engagement strategy. According to the league, 75 games are scheduled during African primetime viewing windows this season, creating more opportunities for fans across the continent to follow the competition at convenient local times.

In South Africa, opening-night coverage will be available live on SuperSport, beginning at 9pm Central Africa Time (CAT).

The opening fixture will see Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics, 18-time NBA champions, visit Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons, who have won three NBA championships.

The opening-night programme will continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning, with additional high-profile matchups featuring some of basketball’s biggest names.

At 1am CAT, Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks will host LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers. The action will continue at 3.30am CAT, when Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs face Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The matchups offer fans an early opportunity to assess the teams and players expected to shape the season’s narrative.

NBA Jersey Day celebrates basketball identity

Beyond the on-court action, the NBA is encouraging supporters to celebrate the culture and community surrounding the game through NBA Jersey Day.

Fans are invited to post photographs wearing NBA jerseys from any era and tag their favourite teams or players for an opportunity to be featured on league and team social media channels.

The initiative recognises the enduring connection between basketball supporters and the teams, players and traditions that define their fandom, while encouraging South African fans to participate in a global celebration of NBA culture.

Opportunity to attend an exclusive Tip-Off Watch Party

Johannesburg fans will also have an opportunity to gain access to an exclusive NBA Tip-Off Watch Party in Sandton on Tuesday, 20 October.

To enter the competition, participants must:

  1. Visit the NBA Start of Season activation at Nelson Mandela Square.
  2. Take a photograph at the activation.
  3. Post the photograph on Instagram.
