MBOMBELA – From preparing meals for royalty in Monaco and hosting a traditional South African braai for Manchester United, to leading kitchens at some of the world’s most prestigious hospitality destinations, Chef Keegan Maistry has built a career defined by excellence, innovation and global experience.

Now, the acclaimed chef is bringing that remarkable culinary journey home as the newest Executive Chef at The Capital Mbombela, ushering in an exciting new chapter for one of Mpumalanga’s leading hospitality destinations.

His appointment signals a significant investment in the hotel’s culinary offering, with guests set to experience menus inspired by international expertise while celebrating the rich flavours and traditions of South African cuisine.

From Royal Banquets to World-Class Kitchens

Maistry’s culinary story began not in a luxury hotel but in his mother’s kitchen, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the power of food to bring people together.

That passion has since taken him across three continents and into some of the hospitality industry’s most demanding environments.

While serving at the iconic The Oyster Box Hotel, Maistry formed part of the culinary team that catered the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco. During the same period, he introduced Manchester United Football Club to its first authentic South African braai—a uniquely local experience enjoyed by one of the world’s most celebrated sporting teams.

His international career continued in the United States, where he worked under Executive Chef Armando Rodriguez at the prestigious Hunters Run Golf Estate in Florida, preparing meals for as many as 600 guests per service.

Maistry later joined the exclusive Fishers Island Private Club, ranked among the world’s leading private clubs, before collaborating with internationally respected chef and culinary educator Nils Noren in New York.

Returning Home with Global Expertise

Despite his international success, Maistry chose to return to South Africa, where he continued refining his craft in some of the country’s most prestigious hospitality establishments.

He served as Sous Chef at the award-winning Singita Sabi Sands, creating fine-dining experiences in one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations before moving into senior leadership roles at the Radisson Blu and Sandton Sun hotels in Johannesburg.

He later opened the flagship Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City as Executive Chef before leading the kitchen at the vibrant Radisson RED Rosebank, renowned for its contemporary and innovative hospitality concept.

His appointment at The Capital Mbombela now marks another milestone in a career that seamlessly blends international sophistication with proudly South African hospitality.

Celebrating Local Flavours

Although his résumé spans luxury resorts, international golf estates and world-renowned hotels, Maistry says his culinary philosophy remains rooted in the values he learnt at home.

“Every kitchen I’ve worked in has taught me something different, but the thread running through all of it is the same one I learned from my mother—food should bring people together and feel like it means something,” he says.

“At The Capital Mbombela, I want to build a menu that’s rooted in local South African flavours, served with the kind of care I’d want on my own table.”

His vision reflects a growing movement within South Africa’s hospitality industry, where chefs are increasingly celebrating indigenous ingredients, local producers and authentic culinary traditions while incorporating international techniques.

A Feast of South African Heritage

Guests will experience Maistry’s philosophy firsthand at Shisanyama Night: A Taste of South Africa, taking place on 25 July at The Capital Mbombela.

Inspired by the country’s vibrant street food culture, the event promises an authentic celebration of South African cuisine, featuring traditional favourites including pap, samp and beans, dombolo, chakalaka, morogo, beef tripe, hard-body chicken, boerewors, seafood curry and bobotie, before ending on a sweet note with malva pudding and koeksisters.

Designed as a communal dining experience, the evening embraces the spirit of sharing that lies at the heart of South African food culture.

Guests will also enjoy live entertainment and a Heineken draught promotion, with the experience priced at R395 per person.

To complement the event, The Capital Mbombela is offering a 20% accommodation discount from 24 to 26 July, encouraging visitors to extend their stay and experience both the hotel’s hospitality and Mpumalanga’s attractions.

Strengthening Mpumalanga’s Hospitality Offering

Maistry’s arrival comes at a time when South Africa’s hospitality industry is increasingly recognising culinary excellence as a key driver of tourism and guest experience.

Hotels are no longer judged solely by accommodation standards but by their ability to offer memorable dining experiences that reflect the unique identity of their destination.

With a chef whose career spans royal banquets, luxury safari lodges, world-class private clubs and internationally recognised hotels, The Capital Mbombela is positioning itself as more than simply a place to stay.

Instead, it aims to become a destination where global culinary expertise meets the authentic flavours of Mpumalanga, offering guests an experience that celebrates both international excellence and South African heritage.

For Chef Keegan Maistry, the journey has come full circle—from learning family recipes in his mother’s kitchen to creating unforgettable dining experiences that continue to bring people together around the table.
