JOHANNESBURG – What started as a digital financial wellness tool a decade ago has evolved into one of South Africa’s most comprehensive lifestyle banking ecosystems, with more than six million customers now using FNB’s nav» platform to manage their finances, purchase homes, build businesses and make smarter life decisions.

Marking its 10th anniversary, FNB has unveiled two new solutions—nav» Youth and nav» Payroll—as the bank responds to changing customer needs in an economy where financial stability, entrepreneurship and multiple income streams are becoming increasingly interconnected.

The milestone reflects a broader transformation in South African banking, where digital platforms are moving beyond transactions to provide customers with practical tools that support every stage of their financial journey.

A Decade of Digital Financial Progress

Since its launch, the nav» ecosystem has become a central part of how millions of South Africans engage with their finances.

According to FNB, customers have created more than R1.75 billion in savings goals through nav» Money, while engagement with the platform has increased 7.5 times over the past decade.

The platform has also played a significant role in home ownership, supporting more than R76 billion in home loans, while nav» Home has assisted over 61,000 customers in finding their homes.

For motorists, nav» Car has simplified vehicle ownership by creating a virtual garage for 1.34 million vehicles and enabling 728,000 digital licence renewals, reducing the need for lengthy visits to licensing centres.

Meanwhile, nav» Care has channelled more than R10.5 million in charitable donations to verified non-profit organisations, demonstrating how digital banking is increasingly supporting social impact alongside personal financial management.

Banking That Reflects Changing Lives

Clair Brenner, CEO of nav», says the platform’s evolution has been driven by a deeper understanding of how South Africans define financial success.

“The last decade has taught us that being better off means something different for everyone. For some people it’s having enough savings to navigate an unexpected setback. For others it’s buying a first home, starting a business or creating an additional income stream.”

She says customer insights have enabled the bank to design solutions that respond to changing lifestyles rather than simply offering traditional banking products.

“What matters is that we continue to listen, understand what’s changing in people’s lives and build solutions that genuinely help.”

New Tools for a New Generation

Recognising the unique financial challenges facing younger South Africans, FNB has launched nav» Youth, a platform designed to support financial independence, entrepreneurship and career development.

The solution combines financial education with practical guidance through a redesigned Learning Hub, Life’s Keys—which provides tools for major life milestones—and the Career Compass podcast.

The platform has already recorded strong early engagement, generating more than 450,000 interactions and supporting 94,000 young customers during the first half of the financial year.

With youth unemployment and economic uncertainty remaining key national challenges, FNB believes equipping young people with financial knowledge is becoming increasingly important.

Simplifying Payroll for Small Businesses

FNB has also introduced nav» Payroll, an integrated payroll solution aimed at small and growing businesses seeking affordable and compliant employee payment systems.

The platform provides five free payslips each month before charging R25 per additional payslip, while automatically aligning payroll reporting with South African Revenue Service (SARS) requirements.

Importantly, professionally generated payslips can also help employees access housing finance, credit facilities and other financial services by providing recognised proof of income.

Since its launch, 132 businesses have already adopted the solution organically.

Stability Is the New Foundation for Growth

One of the strongest trends emerging from ten years of customer data is the changing meaning of financial progress.

Rather than viewing stability as the final destination, customers increasingly see sound financial management as the foundation for broader ambitions such as property ownership, entrepreneurship and building multiple income streams.

This shift is reflected across the wider nav» ecosystem.

The nav» Marketplace now connects customers with more than 9,500 service providers, generating approximately R4.7 million in revenue opportunities for small businesses, while nav» Earth supports customers exploring renewable energy and sustainable living solutions.

Banking Beyond Traditional Products

According to Jolandé Duvenage, CEO of Value Ecosystems & Customer Experience at FNB, modern customers no longer think in terms of individual banking products.

“Whether customers are managing money, buying a home, building a business, improving household resilience or supporting a cause, they don’t see these as separate journeys. Our role is to connect these experiences in ways that remove friction and help customers make progress.”

The approach reflects a growing shift within the banking sector towards ecosystem banking, where financial institutions integrate services across multiple aspects of customers’ lives rather than focusing solely on deposits, loans and payments.

Looking Ahead

As it enters its second decade, FNB believes the future of banking lies in connected digital ecosystems that anticipate customer needs before they arise.

To celebrate the milestone, the bank has launched its nav» 10-Year Birthday Campaign, featuring six months of gamified challenges through the FNB and RMB Private Bank apps.

Customers stand a chance to win prizes including an Ultimate Rugby Experience in 2027, MacBook Air laptops, Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, Nando’s vouchers, Pick n Pay grocery prizes and eBucks fuel rewards.

For FNB, however, the biggest achievement extends beyond customer numbers.

It is the growing evidence that millions of South Africans are using digital financial tools not merely to bank, but to build stronger financial futures, pursue new opportunities and navigate an increasingly complex economic landscape with greater confidence.

As South Africa’s financial services sector continues to evolve, FNB’s nav» ecosystem demonstrates how digital innovation is reshaping the relationship between banks and customers—from managing money to enabling life itself.
