A new era of energy resilience has begun for healthcare in the Vaal region as Midvaal Private Hospital switches on a R34 million renewable-energy system, funded and fully backed by Standard Bank. The installation — among the largest of its kind at a private medical facility in the province — positions the hospital as a leader in energy-secure healthcare, safeguarding critical services and advancing sustainable development for surrounding communities.

The project features a 1.2MW solar photovoltaic (PV) array supported by a 2.5MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), engineered to keep life-dependent equipment running, even during extended grid instability. In its first year, it is projected to generate about 1,426 MWh of clean power, drastically reducing the hospital’s grid reliance while guaranteeing uninterrupted electricity for theatres, ICUs, neonatal care, emergency units and advanced diagnostic technology.

Developed in partnership with Bespoke Energy (EPC Contractor) and TAQA Energy (Project Manager), the system incorporates high-performance LONGi solar panels, Sungrow inverters and SolarMD battery technology — a combination selected for reliability in high-stakes medical environments where power failures are not an option.

A Future-Proof Hospital for a Growing Community

“Reliable and affordable energy is fundamental to patient care and operational continuity,” says Deerosh Maharaj, Executive Head for Energy, Infrastructure & Mining, Business & Commercial Banking at Standard Bank South Africa.
“When electricity supply is unreliable and costly, the downstream impact on essential services is severe. By financing this renewable-energy solution, Standard Bank is investing in the long-term safety of patients, staff and the greater Vaal community.”

Hospital Manager Andre Joubert adds:

“Power stability is a clinical necessity. This project gives us the certainty we need to operate confidently — day, night or during national grid strain. It strengthens our capacity to provide continuous medical care without compromise.”

A Model for the Future of Healthcare in South Africa

This development forms part of Standard Bank Group’s wider sustainability programme, which aims to mobilise over R450 billion in sustainable finance by 2028 to accelerate Africa’s transition to resilient, low-carbon energy systems. Healthcare, an essential sector for socioeconomic stability, sits at the core of this mandate.

Beyond lowering long-term energy costs and insulating operations from load-shedding, the Midvaal installation serves as a blueprint for hospitals nationwide — demonstrating the feasibility, savings, and life-saving reliability of renewable power in medical infrastructure.

The system is expected to:

✔ Reduce operational exposure to rising electricity tariffs
✔ Stabilise critical power supply for clinical environments
✔ Lower emissions and environmental footprint
✔ Provide a replicable model for future hospital energy strategies

A Landmark Investment in Healthcare Security

The Midvaal Private Hospital renewable-energy project is more than an infrastructure upgrade — it is a statement of intent. It signals a future where power outages no longer threaten lives, where medical facilities operate without interruption, and where sustainability is not only aspirational, but operational.

This is how healthcare is strengthened.
This is how communities thrive.
And this is how a resilient future is built — one hospital at a time.
