Cape Town – As the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge kicks off in Cape Town this weekend, highly respected football coach Thabo Senong has hailed the tournament as the foundation of youth football development in South Africa, praising its unmatched role in identifying and nurturing the country’s next generation of stars.
Hosted at Erica Park Grounds in Belhar from 26 to 28 June, the Cape Town leg of the prestigious tournament will see 32 teams—16 in the Under-18 boys’ division and 16 in the Under-20 girls’ competition—battle for regional supremacy and coveted qualification to the Engen Champ of Champs finals in Johannesburg later this year.
Defending champions Cape Town City FC return to protect their boys’ title, while Cape Town Roses begin the defence of their girls’ crown in what promises to be another fiercely contested edition of one of South Africa’s most respected youth football competitions.
The Birthplace of Future Stars
For Senong, whose coaching career has taken him to two FIFA Under-20 World Cups and multiple CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, the Engen Knockout Challenge stands apart as a vital pipeline for developing elite football talent.
Drawing on years of experience scouting and coaching across Lesotho, Tanzania and Malawi, Senong believes no other youth tournament on the continent offers the same developmental impact.
“Having been to two FIFA World Cups, and U-20 AFCON tournaments, lived and worked in Lesotho, Tanzania, Malawi and looking for talent, you could not find a tournament like the Engen Knockout Challenge and the value it brings to youth football development. We have to appreciate the support because this tournament is the cornerstone of youth football development in South Africa,” said Senong.
His endorsement reinforces the tournament’s growing reputation as one of the country’s most important talent identification platforms, where future professionals take their first major steps toward elite football.
More Than a Tournament
Beyond lifting trophies, Senong believes competitive football provides the benchmark every young player and coach needs to grow.
Without meaningful competition, he says, talent cannot be properly measured or developed.
“Without competition, you are unable to measure talent. To the coaches, I know you want to measure and benchmark yourself against other coaches. So, it is a great and big tournament.”
His comments underline the importance of creating consistent, high-quality competitive environments where players can test themselves against the best in their age groups while coaches refine their own methods and philosophies.

Under this year’s inspiring theme, “Where Diski Legends Start,” the Engen Knockout Challenge once again provides aspiring footballers with an invaluable opportunity to perform in front of scouts, professional clubs, coaches and football administrators from across South Africa.
Over three days, hundreds of talented youngsters will compete not only for silverware but also for opportunities that could shape their football careers.
The tournament has become synonymous with launching the careers of many players who have gone on to represent professional clubs and national teams, cementing its place as one of South African football’s most respected development pathways.
Action Begins in Cape Town
The tournament gets underway on Friday morning, with defending girls’ champions Cape Town Roses opening their title defence against Spurs WFC at 09:00, setting the stage for an action-packed weekend of exciting youth football.
As teams battle for regional honours and qualification for the national finals, the Engen Knockout Challenge once again promises to celebrate excellence, inspire the next generation of footballers and reaffirm why it remains one of the country’s most influential youth sporting events.
