PRETORIA – One of Gauteng’s fastest-growing road running events is set to return in spectacular fashion this September as the highly anticipated Sappi Tuks Night Race prepares to once again transform the University of Pretoria’s Hillcrest Sports Campus into a vibrant celebration of fitness, community and sporting excellence.

Following the remarkable success of the Sappi TuksRace held earlier this year, organisers TuksSport and title sponsor Sappi have officially announced the return of the popular night-time event, scheduled for 9 September 2026.

The February edition attracted more than 5,000 participants, cementing its status as one of the largest road running events on Pretoria’s sporting calendar. Runners from across Gauteng and beyond praised the race for its scenic route through the University of Pretoria campus, exceptional organisation and energetic atmosphere.

With fewer than 90 days remaining before the starting gun sounds, anticipation is already building among runners eager to experience the unique thrill of racing under the lights.

A Celebration of Community and Fitness

The Sappi Tuks Night Race has quickly established itself as more than just a running event.

Combining sport, recreation and community engagement, the race offers participants an opportunity to enjoy a safe and professionally managed route while experiencing the distinctive spirit and energy synonymous with TuksSport.

This year’s event will once again feature 5km and 10km race options, with the 10km route comprising a double-lap course through the picturesque Hillcrest Sports Campus.

Participants can expect a well-lit course, festive race village atmosphere and enthusiastic support from spectators, volunteers and fellow runners.

According to Steven Ball, Director of TuksSport and CEO of the High-Performance Centre (HPC), the success of the February race demonstrated the power of sport to unite communities.

“The Sappi TuksRace in February showed us what’s possible when sport brings a community together. Just over 5,000 runners turned out and the feedback was incredible,” said Ball.

“The Night Race is our chance to do it again, but under the lights. It’s about inclusivity, fitness and showcasing why TuksSport stands for excellence on and off the field.”

Building on a Winning Formula

The partnership between TuksSport and Sappi continues to play a key role in the growth of the event, helping create a race experience that appeals to competitive athletes, recreational runners and families alike.

For Sappi, the race aligns with its broader commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening community connections.

Michelle Le Roux, Public Relations and Marketing Lead for Sappi Southern Africa, says the company is excited to once again be part of an event that has become a highlight on Pretoria’s sporting calendar.

“Sappi is proud to once again partner with the Tuks Night Race, building on the strong momentum and community spirit generated by last year’s event,” she said.

“The race aligns with our commitment to supporting active, connected communities, and we look forward to an even bigger and more vibrant experience this year.”

Growing Pretoria’s Running Culture

The return of the Sappi Tuks Night Race reflects the continued growth of road running in South Africa, with more people embracing participation events that combine fitness, social interaction and outdoor experiences.

The event also contributes to Pretoria’s reputation as a major destination for sport and recreation, drawing participants from across the province while showcasing the world-class facilities and scenic surroundings of the University of Pretoria.

With entries expected to open soon, organisers are encouraging runners to secure their places early as demand is anticipated to be high following the success of the February event.

As race day approaches, the countdown has officially begun for what promises to be another memorable evening of running, camaraderie and sporting celebration under the Pretoria night sky.
