MAZEPPA BAY STORY: THE PUZZLE BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND UKRAINE, WITH THE HOPES FOR MORE TOURISM & LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

In a remarkable fusion of cultures and histories, the View Mazeppa Bay Hotel in the Mnquma Local Municipality is set to unveil a new information sign dedicated to the significant narratives that bind South Africa and Ukraine. Scheduled for the unveiling is an event that not only enhances the appeal of Mazeppa Bay as a tourist destination but also pays homage to the land and its storied past—a tapestry woven from the threads of tradition, resilience, and heritage.

Before unveiling the vibrant sign, local leaders and elders will gather to share the rich heritage of the Wild Coast. They will recount tales that echo the stewardship by the Xhosa people over generations, weaving through the legacy of the frontier wars and the complexities of the apartheid-era Transkei homeland system. This area resonates with the memories of ancestors who fought for freedom and dignity, with new stories converging alongside their everlasting narratives.

The information sign is not just a historical marker but a tribute to the unique connection between Ukraine and South Africa. Featuring an illustration of the Mazeppa schooner alongside a portrait of Ivan Mazepa—an iconic 17th-century Ukrainian leader—the sign draws inspiration from Mahéza’s voyages that reached our shores through maritime history and poetic elegance. The word “Freedom” is inscribed in 11 South African languages and Ukrainian, signifying a shared ideal that transcends geographical boundaries.

“Ivan Mazepa is an important figure in Ukrainian history, associated with freedom, education, and the fight for independence. It is a privilege to place his story alongside the proud history of Mazeppa Bay and the Eastern Cape people who have safeguarded this land for generations,” reflected Kateryna Alioshyna, President of the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA).

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the View Mazeppa Bay Hotel, UAZA, and the Embassy of Ukraine to South Africa. The partners have made a pledge to work closely with the local community, ensuring that the growth of tourism translates into tangible benefits for households through employment opportunities, skills development, and cultural preservation.

Since 2024, Judy Jennings, a prominent businesswoman from Mthatha, has been leasing the Mazeppa Bay Hotel from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation. Under her stewardship, the hotel has undergone revitalisation, generating much-needed jobs for local residents. “I am dedicated to uplifting the area and creating more employment. Our region’s beauty and heritage are our greatest assets, and telling our story is just as important as welcoming visitors from around the world,” Jennings stated passionately.

The namesake of Mazeppa Bay is linked to the schooner Mazeppa (1842), which docked near the Natal coast during the First Anglo-Boer War. Ivan Mazepa, the 17th-century Cossack hetman, was known for his investments in education and church-building, championing freedoms that resonate even today.

“South Africa and Ukraine share a history of resistance to domination,” commented Liubov Abravitova, Ambassador of Ukraine to South Africa. “By placing both histories side-by-side, we honour the dignity of the Eastern Cape people while also celebrating Ukraine’s contribution to the ideals of freedom,” she stressed, reflecting the essence of mutual respect and shared heritage.

As the event unfolds, the words of Nelson Mandela linger in the air, echoing the sentiment of liberation: “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” In this spirit, the unveiling of the information sign promises to be a moment of unity, remembrance, and hope for a brighter future.
