Johannesburg – South African low-cost carrier FlySafair has been named the most punctual airline in the Middle East and Africa for 2025, following an exceptional performance in the annual Cirium On-Time Performance Review, the aviation industry’s most authoritative benchmark for airline reliability.
The airline achieved a world-leading 91.06% on-time arrival rate, outperforming major global carriers such as Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad, and even surpassing the global leader AeroMexico, which recorded a 90.02% on-time performance score for the same period.
The accolade cements FlySafair’s reputation as one of the most operationally disciplined airlines in the world and reinforces South Africa’s growing footprint in global aviation excellence.
A Global Benchmark of Excellence
Cirium’s On-Time Performance Review analyses more than 25 million flight records from over 600 data sources worldwide, making it the aviation industry’s most trusted measurement of punctuality and reliability.
According to Cirium’s criteria, a flight is classified as “on time” if it arrives within 14 minutes and 59 seconds of its scheduled landing time. Only airlines meeting strict operational scale, data coverage and regional diversity requirements qualify for the rankings.
FlySafair not only led the Middle East and Africa region but also exceeded the global industry benchmark, underscoring its ability to deliver consistent performance under increasingly complex operational conditions.
Discipline Under Pressure
FlySafair Chief Marketing Officer Kirby Gordon said the recognition carries particular weight given the operational pressures facing airlines globally.
“Maintaining reliable on-time performance in today’s environment has required extraordinary coordination and discipline,” said Gordon. “Air traffic management constraints, fuel supply uncertainties and airport infrastructure challenges — including baggage handling systems beyond an airline’s direct control — have made consistency more difficult than ever. This achievement is a credit to the dedication of our teams.”
Since launching in 2014, FlySafair has consistently ranked among the world’s most punctual airlines, securing multiple global and regional awards over the years — an indication that its performance is not episodic, but systemic.
Operational Resilience and Customer Trust
Beyond punctuality, FlySafair’s performance reflects a broader culture of operational excellence and customer focus.
In 2025, the airline operated 98.9% of its scheduled flights, one of the lowest cancellation rates in the region, demonstrating resilience in a sector still stabilising after pandemic-era disruptions.
The airline’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) — a global benchmark for customer loyalty — reached an exceptional +79.5, placing FlySafair close to the “world-class” category defined by Bain & Company, creators of the NPS methodology. By comparison, the global airline industry averages around +33, while leading full-service carriers such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines typically record scores between +65 and +75.
“There is a strong correlation between punctuality and customer satisfaction,” Gordon noted. “But what truly drives consistently high performance is an unwavering focus on the customer and on getting the fundamentals right.”
Leadership on the Ground
FlySafair attributes part of its success to hands-on leadership and frontline engagement. During peak travel periods, senior executives were physically present at airports and in operational control centres to support teams and manage emerging risks.
“Every flight brings new variables,” said Gordon. “Sustained excellence depends on continuous attention and discipline. This approach has underpinned our growth and will continue to guide our future.”
Award-Winning Momentum
The airline’s Cirium recognition adds to an already impressive list of accolades. In 2025, FlySafair was awarded:
- Best Airline at the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s Excellence Awards (public vote)
- Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa at the Skytrax World Airline Awards
In December 2025 alone, FlySafair transported nearly one million passengers, reflecting strong market confidence in its reliability and value proposition.
A Mindset, Not Just a Metric
While acknowledging that occasional disruptions are inevitable, FlySafair says it remains committed to improving communication and service recovery when challenges arise.
“Reliability matters because it impacts real people and real lives,” Gordon said. “Operational excellence is not just a metric for us — it’s a mindset. This recognition from Cirium confirms that we are on the right path.”
As global aviation continues to rebuild and expand, FlySafair’s achievement positions South Africa as a leading contributor to reliability and service excellence on the international aviation stage.
