Johannesburg – The worlds of motorsport heritage and digital innovation converged in spectacular fashion as Engen Xtreme partnered with the #MazdaMasters2026 Sim Racing Championship, a national esports event that celebrated speed, precision and engineering excellence while paying tribute to one of the greatest achievements in racing history.
Held as part of Mazda Southern Africa’s 787B Heritage Campaign, the championship commemorated the 35th anniversary of the legendary Mazda 787B’s victory at the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours—a landmark achievement that saw Mazda become the first Japanese manufacturer to win the iconic endurance race outright. More than three decades later, the rotary-powered 787B remains the only car of its kind to claim overall victory, cementing its place as one of motorsport’s most celebrated icons.
The championship brought together South Africa’s top 40 sim racers, who battled through a highly competitive digital racing series before contesting a thrilling live national final hosted by Mettlestate on 20 June. While competitors raced remotely from sophisticated simulation rigs across the country, fans tuned in to an immersive six-hour live broadcast featuring race coverage, expert analysis, driver interviews and prize presentations.
Far more than a gaming competition, the event showcased how technology is transforming the way motorsport is experienced, creating opportunities for aspiring racers to compete on a national stage while connecting legendary automotive brands with a new generation of enthusiasts.
Engen Xtreme played a key role in the championship by sponsoring the Engen Xtreme Oil Grid Legends Top 10 Finish Award, recognising outstanding performances beyond the podium. Competitors finishing between fourth and thirteenth place each received prize money as part of the initiative, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to rewarding consistency, endurance and excellence throughout the field.
The championship’s main prize pool awarded R30,000 to the winning team, together with vouchers valued at R10,000 for each team member. Second place earned R15,000, while third place secured R5,000, ensuring fierce competition from start to finish.
Engen Xtreme also enhanced the overall championship experience through its contribution to the event’s prize fund and by extending its performance-driven philosophy beyond the virtual circuit. In partnership with SWITCH, five special award recipients over the age of 18 were rewarded with Engen Xtreme SWITCH energy drinks, celebrating competitors who embodied the passion and determination synonymous with high-performance motorsport.
For Engen Lubricants Marketing Manager Melissa Graham, the partnership reflected the natural evolution of motorsport engagement.
“Motorsport has always been about more than winning races,” Graham explained. “It represents precision, passion, performance and constantly pushing boundaries. Sim racing allows us to connect with a new generation of enthusiasts while remaining true to what Engen Xtreme stands for—delivering performance under pressure.”
Graham also highlighted how the rapid growth of gaming culture presents exciting opportunities for automotive brands to engage younger audiences through authentic, performance-led experiences. During the live Ignition TV broadcast, she joined a leadership discussion exploring the intersection of esports, youth culture and modern brand engagement, while emphasising the critical role quality lubricants play in delivering reliability where performance matters most.
The collaboration between Engen Xtreme and Mazda Southern Africa demonstrated how two respected automotive brands can successfully bridge the gap between motorsport’s rich history and its rapidly evolving digital future.
As sim racing continues to gain global recognition as a legitimate motorsport discipline, initiatives such as #MazdaMasters2026 are helping redefine how fans experience competition, allowing anyone with talent, dedication and the right equipment to compete alongside the country’s best virtual drivers.
By honouring the enduring legacy of the Mazda 787B while embracing cutting-edge digital competition, the championship delivered far more than an esports event—it celebrated the timeless values of innovation, endurance and excellence that continue to define motorsport across generations.
