COURSERA ENHANCES ACCESSIBILITY FOR SA LEARNERS WITH NEW COURSE PREVIEWS AND LOCAL PRICING

Coursera, Inc. (NYSE: COUR), a leading global online learning platform, has unveiled an engaging new course preview experience alongside localized pricing, aimed at making world-class education more accessible and cost-effective for learners across South Africa. This initiative marks a significant stride towards Coursera’s objective of equipping learners worldwide with essential skills to advance their careers.

The newly introduced model will replace the prior audit experience, now enabling learners to access the first module of nearly every course on Coursera for free. This includes graded assignments, video content, and AI-powered support features such as Coursera Coach, where available. This transition is tailored to create a deeper, more interactive learning experience, allowing potential students to meaningfully engage with course content before making a financial commitment to a full course.

The revised pricing structure for South Africa is notably competitive, offering:

  • Professional Certificates and Specializations starting at $29/month (up to 40% less expensive)
  • Coursera Plus (Monthly) subscription at $35 (40% less expensive)
  • Coursera Plus (Annual) subscription at $239 (40% less expensive)

Coursera Plus provides access to an extensive library of over 10,000 courses and Professional Certificates, sourced from more than 350 university and industry partners. Learners wishing to focus on individual courses can also enroll at a cost of $49.

Greg Hart, CEO of Coursera, emphasised the company’s commitment to the South African market, stating, “As one of our fastest-growing and most engaged learner markets, South Africa is at the heart of our mission. The new course preview experience makes learning more engaging from day one, offering learners a richer way to explore content, while our localized pricing ensures it’s more accessible nationwide.”

Furthermore, Coursera is also providing complimentary access to Community Impact Courses addressing urgent social issues such as mental health, public health, and refugee support. Eligible learners can continue to apply for financial aid, ensuring that learning opportunities remain accessible for all.

This development is part of a broader global rollout encompassing over 100 countries. Initial tests have shown that granting access to comprehensive course features, including assignments and AI tools, significantly enhances learner engagement and course completion rates. With 1.6 million active learners, South Africa ranks as Coursera’s second-largest market in Sub-Saharan Africa, with enrolments in Generative AI courses alone exceeding 50,000.

Founded in 2012 by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, Coursera has grown to be one of the world’s largest online learning providers, boasting over 183 million registered learners by June 2025. Partnering with more than 350 prestigious universities and industry leaders, Coursera offers a wide array of learning opportunities, including courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates, and degrees that equip individuals for in-demand fields such as Generative AI, data science, technology, and business.
