A MILESTONE FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH: MEC NOMANTU NKOMO-RALEHOKO OPENS REFURBISHED BREAST CANCER CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

In a powerful step forward for women’s health and access to quality cancer care, Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko officially opened the newly refurbished Breast Cancer Centre of Excellence at Helen Joseph Hospital. The launch marks a major milestone in the province’s commitment to dignified, patient-centred care, and coincides with the #GPSurgicalMarathon and Mandela Day commemorations.

The Centre is designed to be a dedicated space for early detection, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of breast cancer — a disease that continues to affect thousands of South African women each year. The refurbishment includes updated infrastructure, state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, improved consulting rooms, and expanded treatment capacity — ensuring that patients receive timely and compassionate care from screening through recovery.

Speaking at the opening, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized the importance of bringing services closer to the people:

“This Centre is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about restoring dignity, improving survival, and providing every woman with the care she deserves, regardless of her background. We are building a healthcare system that listens, that heals, and that delivers hope.”

  • The Centre of Excellence will also serve as a key driver in the fight against cancer by:
    • Enhancing early detection and diagnostic capabilities through advanced screening tools and skilled personnel
    • Expanding access to life-saving treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, and follow-up support

Located at one of Gauteng’s busiest tertiary hospitals, the facility is expected to serve thousands of patients annually — especially those referred from surrounding districts.

As part of the broader #GPSurgicalMarathon campaign, the launch reinforces the provincial government’s mission to accelerate access to essential surgeries and specialist care — with a focus on equity, dignity, and quality.

This Mandela Day, the Centre stands as a lasting symbol of what can be achieved when leadership, compassion, and community come together in service of health and humanity.
