Township entrepreneurs across South Africa now have a major opportunity to scale their businesses, as Standard Bank officially launches the 2026 edition of the Standard Bank Kasi SME National Pitch Challenge, with a staggering R1 million grand prize up for grabs.
Applications for the provincial rounds opened on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, and will close on 22 May 2026, inviting qualifying small and medium enterprises from all nine provinces to compete for funding, mentorship, and national recognition.
Now in its second national edition, the initiative forms part of the broader Kasi SME Summit, which celebrates its fourth anniversary this year. Over the years, the summit has evolved into a powerful platform aimed at accelerating township business growth, unlocking market access, and driving sustainable entrepreneurship within South Africa’s township economy.
The competition is designed to do more than simply reward business ideas. It seeks to connect township enterprises with real economic opportunities by linking entrepreneurs to corporate supply chains, financiers, retail partners, digital marketplaces, and ecosystem enablers committed to inclusive economic growth.
In each province, 10 entrepreneurs will be shortlisted to pitch their businesses before a panel of judges. From there, the top three finalists will be selected, with the provincial winner receiving R50,000, while first and second runners-up each walk away with R10,000.
The nine provincial winners, together with one additional first runner-up, will form the national Top 10 finalists competing in the highly anticipated national finals later this year for the ultimate R1 million prize.
Beyond financial support, finalists will also receive access to a specialised Enterprise and Supplier Development pitching masterclass hosted by Standard Bank. The programme is aimed at sharpening participants’ business models, storytelling abilities, investor readiness, and presentation skills ahead of the final stage of the competition.
Speaking on the launch of the challenge, Naledzani Mosomane, Head of Enterprise and Supplier Development at Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank South Africa, said the initiative continues to serve as a critical launchpad for township entrepreneurs.
“The National Pitch Challenge gives township SMEs the stage to showcase their innovation and resilience. This initiative reflects Standard Bank’s ongoing commitment to unlocking market access and creating pathways for sustainable business growth,” she said.
Mosomane added that township businesses remain essential contributors to local communities and the broader South African economy, particularly as the country continues to focus on inclusive growth and economic transformation.
To qualify, businesses must meet several criteria, including:
- At least 51% black ownership;
- Be located within a South African township;
- Possess a valid BBBEE certificate or sworn affidavit;
- Be registered with the CIPC;
- Have been operational for at least two years;
- Generate annual revenue below R50 million;
- Hold a valid tax certificate; and
- Applicants must be 18 years or older.
As competition intensifies within South Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape, initiatives such as the Standard Bank Kasi SME National Pitch Challenge are increasingly becoming vital springboards for township enterprises seeking investment, exposure, and long-term sustainability.
Entrepreneurs interested in entering the competition can apply through the official Standard Bank Kasi SME Pitch Challenge platform before the closing date of Friday, 22 May 2026.
