Pretoria, South Africa — In a landmark step toward bolstering national safety, top officials from law enforcement, emergency services, conservation authorities, and South Africa’s private security sector have signed a cross-sector declaration committing to enhanced collaboration during the country’s most vulnerable period — the night-time “critical hours” between 6pm and 6am.

The new initiative, Operation Night Watch, brings together the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Fire and Rescue Operations, SANParks, Bidvest Protea Coin, and more than two dozen private security companies. The declaration was formalised at a high-level security industry indaba held on 13 November at Zwartkop Country Club in Centurion, hosted by tactical illumination specialist Nextorch Africa.

The gathering featured keynote presentations from leading security figures, including Samuel Madalane, Head of the SANParks Rangers Division and national anti-poaching initiative Operation Watchdog; Roelof Schoeman, Head of Tactical Operations at Bidvest Protea Coin; Thys Klein, CEO of Genesis K9 Group; and Werner van der Westhuizen, Director at Nextorch Africa.

“A Unified Front for Safer Nights”

Speaking at the event, van der Westhuizen stressed the importance of breaking down siloed operations across the security landscape.

“Law enforcement, emergency services, and private security companies all share a common goal — protecting citizens, police officers, security guards, and national assets. Operation Night Watch creates a platform for these sectors to share knowledge, align strategies, and operate as one,” he said.

South Africa faces one of the world’s highest rates of night-time criminal activity. Stats SA’s 2024/25 Victims of Crime Survey estimates 1.5 million incidents of housebreaking, affecting 1.1 million households. With over 2.7 million registered private security officers, South Africa’s private security sector is the largest on the globe — and an indispensable partner to SAPS in combating night-time crime spikes.

Van der Westhuizen emphasised that private security companies’ deep community integration gives them unique, real-time insights into high-risk zones and population patterns — intelligence crucial to improving coordinated safety operations.

“Private security teams are often the first to understand emerging threats. Formalising our cooperation with law enforcement and emergency services ensures that these insights can be used swiftly and effectively,” he added.

A Collective Commitment

Representatives from 25 major security companies — including ProShield, SDS Security, Beagle Security, and Monitornet — attended the launch and endorsed the memorandum. To reinforce the initiative’s focus on tactical excellence, Nextorch Africa equipped attendees with military-grade tactical flashlights and conducted live demonstrations showcasing illumination tools essential to night-time operations.

FACTBOX: What Operation Night Watch Commits To

Under the new memorandum, participating organisations pledge to:

  • Uphold the highest ethical and operational standards.
  • Promote public awareness on night-time safety and best practices.
  • Strengthen collaboration between law enforcement, emergency responders, and private security.
  • Cooperate on training, joint patrols, and operational readiness.
  • Drive technological innovation in tactical illumination and safety equipment.
  • Continuously invest in improved tactical operations, equipment, and personnel preparedness.

Strength in Collaboration

With urban crime, poaching pressures in national parks, and rising threats to emergency responders and security personnel, Operation Night Watch represents a proactive, unified response to challenges that no single entity can overcome alone.

By merging expertise, technology, and strategic intent, South Africa’s security ecosystem is taking a decisive step toward safer communities — hour by hour, from dusk until dawn.
