Pretoria, South Africa — In a major boost for South African cricket development, the Pretoria Capitals have officially launched the Pretoria Capitals TuksCricket Academy, a high-performance partnership with TuksCricket at the University of Pretoria. The initiative marks a significant milestone in the Capitals’ long-term strategy to build a sustainable player development pipeline and deepen cricketing excellence in the region.

Based at the world-class TuksCricket facilities on the University of Pretoria’s Hillcrest Sports Campus, the academy will train aspiring cricketers aged 17 to 25, offering an integrated program that blends elite cricket coaching with conditioning, sports science, and personal development.

A World-Class Environment for High-Performance Growth

The academy will operate within the wider TuksSport ecosystem, which collaborates with the Sports Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI) at the High-Performance Centre (HPC). Through SEMLI, players will benefit from top-tier sports medicine, physiotherapy, biokinetics, nutrition, and sport science services traditionally reserved for professional athletes.

Training will take place across some of the country’s most advanced cricket infrastructure, including:

  • 6 cricket ovals
  • 23 center wickets
  • 16 grass nets and 8 artificial nets
  • 4 indoor lanes

This environment mirrors the demands of professional cricket, giving players the conditions they need to prepare, compete and grow at the highest standards.

Each week, athletes will undergo five structured sessions, blending cricket-specific training with strength and conditioning. They will also participate in competitive tournaments and friendly fixtures, ensuring consistent match exposure.

A Talent Pipeline Rooted in 100 Years of Excellence

For more than a century, TuksCricket has stood as one of South Africa’s most reliable cricket talent nurseries. The program has developed numerous players who have gone on to represent provincial teams, domestic franchises, and the national side.

The Pretoria Capitals’ partnership with TuksCricket strengthens this legacy by expanding access, raising performance standards, and creating a modern pathway for young cricketers with professional aspirations.

The academy also forms a core part of the Capitals’ ambition to establish a year-round footprint in South Africa. Beyond the SA20 season, the franchise aims to invest meaningfully in cricket’s long-term growth — from grassroots initiatives to elite performance systems.

A Partnership Built on Vision and Opportunity

Divyanshu Singh, CEO of JSW Sports and Pretoria Capitals, says the academy represents a strategic step toward developing the next generation of South African talent:

“Our vision has always been to invest in the long-term growth of cricket and create opportunities for young players to experience a professional, high-performance environment. Partnering with TuksCricket allows us to build that pathway in Pretoria, using their exceptional facilities and expertise.
The Pretoria Capitals Cricket Academy will be a place where young cricketers can prepare, perform and progress towards the next level. It also reflects our intent to have a meaningful, year-round presence in South Africa and strengthen our connection with the local cricket ecosystem.”

Steven Ball, Director of TuksSport and CEO of the High-Performance Centre, says the partnership aligns with TuksSport’s mission to lead in African sports excellence:

“We are proud of the rich history of our TuksCricket programme, which has produced players who’ve represented provincial franchises, national teams and the Proteas.
Our partnership with the international brand Pretoria Capitals aligns with our vision of being Africa’s leading university sports programme — rooted in heritage and committed to transformation, diversity, and active citizenship.
Through the HPC, SEMLI, and our coaching expertise, we believe we can make a major impact. Together, we are shaping the next generation of cricketers.”

A New Chapter for Cricket in Pretoria

With its combination of world-class facilities, expert coaching, scientific support, and competitive exposure, the Pretoria Capitals TuksCricket Academy is set to become a foundational platform for nurturing South Africa’s future cricket professionals.

The launch strengthens Pretoria’s role as one of the country’s most important hubs for cricket development — and signals a bold, collaborative commitment to the future of the sport.
