UP-Tuks and UJ meet in a potentially revealing Varsity Soccer clash tomorrow, with the result unlikely to alter both teams’ semi-final ambitions but capable of setting the tone for a possible rematch next week.

Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 at Tuks, with both sides all but assured of progressing to the knockout stages.
For UJ, however, there is still plenty on the line. A victory would secure top spot on the log, giving the Johannesburg side home advantage in the semi-final and potentially the final.
Tuks, meanwhile, would finish third if they beat UJ. That scenario could set up another meeting between the two sides in the semi-finals, provided the other results fall into place.
If Tuks lose, they could instead face Wits in the last four, depending on the outcome of UWC’s clash with Kovsies.
With so much potentially riding on the final permutations, Tuks coach Nicholas Stothard expects tomorrow’s encounter to have an intriguing tactical dimension.
“We certainly don’t want to show all our cards tomorrow. We’d like to win and keep the momentum going. The most important thing will be to honour the game by playing at our best,” Stothard says.
The Tuks coach also faces selection decisions with the knockout stages approaching, with some players carrying injury concerns while others are at risk of suspension.
That could provide an opportunity for squad rotation, particularly given Tuks’ depth.
“I always say the Varsity Tournament is two competitions. First there is the round robin phase. Once that ends, the next competition starts. Then you are one game away from playing the final and two games away from potentially lifting the trophy,” Stothard says.
The Tuks coach believes managing the squad without losing competitive momentum will be crucial.
“As things stand, some players have injury niggles, and a few are at risk of suspension. We have to be careful with that. Maybe some of the injured players need a bit of a rest. Luckily, we have squad depth. I could give some other players time on the field.”
The teams enter the contest with recent history offering little to separate them.
UJ defeated Tuks 1-0 in last year’s Varsity Soccer Tournament, while Tuks got the better of UJ in December’s USSA Tournament, winning 3-0 on penalties.
That record suggests tomorrow’s encounter could be another tightly contested affair.
One area where Tuks have made significant progress this season, however, is in front of goal.
The Pretoria side has scored 12 goals in six matches, the highest tally in the tournament. That represents a notable improvement from last year’s campaign, when a lack of goals proved one of Tuks’ major weaknesses.
Stothard wants that attacking threat to translate into greater ruthlessness when his team reaches the final third.
“There is no point getting to the final third and then passing the ball backwards, relinquishing possession,” he says.
“It will be important to be forceful and try and capitalise on every scoring opportunity in the final third. It is all about scoring goals. The more, the better.”
The coach believes experience gained from previous tournaments has helped his players develop greater confidence and composure in attacking situations.
For UJ, the match presents an opportunity to reinforce their position at the top of the standings. For Tuks, it is a chance to maintain momentum, test their squad depth and sharpen their attacking edge before the business end of the tournament.
And if the tournament permutations fall into place, tomorrow’s clash could prove to be more than just a round-robin fixture.
It could be the first act of a two-part Varsity Soccer rivalry, with the teams potentially meeting again when the semi-finals arrive.
