JOHANNESBURG – Standard Bank has cemented its position as South Africa’s leading banking brand after being named the country’s most valuable financial services brand and the second most valuable brand overall in the 2026 Kantar BrandZ Top 30 Most Valuable South African Brands rankings.
The bank’s brand value surged by 54% to US$4.724 billion, up from US$3.066 billion in the previous 2024 ranking, significantly outperforming the overall Top 30 brands, which recorded average growth of 47%.
The recognition highlights Standard Bank’s sustained financial performance, customer trust and continued investment in innovation as it strengthens its position across South Africa and the African continent.
A brand built on trust and growth
The Kantar BrandZ rankings measure more than financial performance, combining brand value with consumer perceptions, loyalty and market demand.
According to Kantar, the world’s strongest brands are those that become part of people’s everyday lives, earn trust during times of uncertainty and consistently deliver meaningful value.
For Standard Bank, the latest ranking reflects decades of building enduring relationships with clients while adapting to an increasingly digital and competitive financial services environment.
Confidence from clients drives success
David Hodnett, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Bank South Africa, said the recognition is a testament to the confidence clients continue to place in the bank.
“Being named South Africa’s most valuable financial services brand is a significant endorsement of the trust, relevance and confidence that clients continue to place in Standard Bank,” said Hodnett.
“The result reflects the role we play as a partner in our clients’ journey of growth.”
He explained that Standard Bank’s role extends beyond providing financial products by helping customers navigate every stage of their personal and business journeys.
“Our commitment is not only to help clients reach a destination, but to embrace the full journey with them, whether they are building financial resilience, growing an enterprise, investing in infrastructure or expanding into new markets. By combining deep local insight, specialist expertise and the connected capabilities of Standard Bank Group, we are able to help clients turn ambition into progress.”
Driven by purpose
The bank’s continued growth is anchored in its purpose, “Africa is our home, we drive her growth,” and its Keep Growing brand philosophy.
Recognising that growth is rarely linear, Standard Bank has positioned itself as a long-term financial partner capable of supporting clients through changing life stages, evolving business cycles and shifting economic conditions.
Its integrated offering spans personal banking, business banking, corporate and investment banking, providing tailored financial solutions across multiple sectors.
Investing in technology and innovation
Central to Standard Bank’s success has been significant investment in digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.
Across the Group, the bank has modernised its core banking systems while expanding cloud computing capabilities, artificial intelligence solutions and advanced payments technology.
These investments are improving operational efficiency, strengthening cybersecurity, reducing transaction friction and enabling more personalised customer experiences.
The digital transformation strategy also reinforces the bank’s ability to deliver faster, more reliable financial services across its growing African footprint.
Liberty strengthens the Group
The latest BrandZ rankings also highlighted strong progress by Liberty, further demonstrating the strength of the broader Standard Bank Group.
Liberty improved its brand value from US$328 million in 2023 to US$362 million in 2024 while moving from 27th to 24th place in the rankings.
Hodnett said the combined success of Standard Bank and Liberty illustrates the advantages of offering clients integrated banking, insurance, investment and wealth management solutions.
“These results demonstrate the strength of a Group that can serve clients through more of their growth journey,” he said.
“Standard Bank and Liberty are distinct brands, but together they demonstrate the breadth of expertise and capability available to clients, from everyday banking and business growth to protection, investment and long-term wealth creation.”
Five years of remarkable momentum
The latest achievement marks another milestone in Standard Bank’s sustained rise within the BrandZ rankings.
Since 2021, the bank has climbed from fourth position to consistently hold second place among South Africa’s most valuable brands.
During the same period, its brand value has more than doubled—from US$2.350 billion in 2021 to US$4.724 billion in 2026—reflecting growing customer confidence and continued business expansion.
International recognition continues
The Kantar BrandZ accolade follows several other major international recognitions received by Standard Bank this year.
Among its recent achievements, the bank was named:
- South Africa’s most AI-mature bank and the second-ranked bank in the Middle East and Africa in the inaugural Evident AI Index for Banks, while also topping the region’s Innovation pillar.
- Winner of six prestigious honours at the Euromoney Private Banking Awards 2026, including Africa’s Best Private Bank, Africa’s Best for Family Office Services, and Africa’s Best for High-Net-Worth Clients.
