Johannesburg, 28 September 2026 — Standard Bank has provided R2.137 billion in affordable housing finance to 3,351 households during the first half of 2026, reinforcing its focus on expanding access to homeownership and supporting broader financial inclusion in South Africa.

The bank’s latest figures show the scale of demand for affordable home finance among lower- and middle-income households, while highlighting the role of property ownership in building household wealth and long-term financial resilience.

A notable feature of the first-half performance was the participation of women, who accounted for 48.63% of affordable housing mortgages granted by Standard Bank during H1 2026.

The bank says this reflects the contribution of affordable housing finance to increasing access to assets and strengthening financial participation among women.

Affordable housing portfolio exceeds R36 billion

Standard Bank’s affordable housing loan book reached 95,494 homes, with a total value of R36.043 billion during the first half of the year.

The figures position affordable housing as a significant component of the bank’s broader home-financing activities, while demonstrating the scale of financing already extended to households seeking to enter or strengthen their position in the property market.

For many households, homeownership represents more than securing a place to live. Property can provide an important foundation for financial stability, wealth creation and the transfer of assets between generations.

Toni Anderson, Head of Home Services at Standard Bank, says homeownership can play a central role in a family’s long-term financial security.

“A home is often a family’s most valuable asset and the foundation of long-term financial security,” Anderson says.

“Through our affordable housing offering, we’re helping thousands of South Africans take the important step into homeownership, build wealth and create stability for future generations.”

Anderson also highlighted the proportion of women accessing the bank’s affordable housing finance, saying the figure supports wider economic participation and financial independence.

Bridging the home-finance gap

Standard Bank works with government and housing-sector partners to support households that may not qualify for fully subsidised housing but can face barriers when seeking conventional home finance.

The bank provides financing solutions for qualifying first-time buyers, including assistance with upfront home acquisition costs and access to relevant government housing programmes where applicable.

The approach is designed to address part of the gap between subsidised housing and conventional property finance, creating additional pathways into homeownership for qualifying households.

Education forms part of the homeownership journey

Standard Bank’s support extends beyond providing finance.

During 2025, more than 1,300 affordable housing customers participated in homeowner training programmes designed to help them understand and manage the responsibilities associated with owning a property.

In the first half of 2026 alone, a further 719 customers participated in affordable housing training.

The education component is significant because homeownership brings a range of ongoing financial responsibilities, including bond repayments, maintenance, insurance, municipal costs and household budgeting.

By combining financing with education and support, the bank aims to help customers manage the longer-term financial implications of property ownership.

Focus on household affordability and resilience

Standard Bank is also expanding initiatives aimed at improving financial wellbeing and reducing the ongoing cost of homeownership.

These include solutions designed to help homeowners improve energy efficiency, reduce household expenditure and strengthen resilience against rising utility costs.

The focus reflects a broader shift in the housing sector, where affordability increasingly extends beyond the purchase price of a property to include the long-term cost of running and maintaining a home.

For homeowners, improvements in energy efficiency can potentially contribute to lower household costs while supporting longer-term sustainability.
