JOHANNESBURG – South African football enters another exciting chapter as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) officially launched the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, celebrating three decades of professional football excellence while setting the stage for another fiercely contested campaign.
The launch event, held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, brought together PSL executives, Betway leadership, coaches from all 16 Premiership clubs and key football stakeholders to commemorate the League’s 30th anniversary and unveil plans for the new season, which kicks off on Saturday, 1 August 2026.
The milestone marks 30 years since the PSL transformed the professional game in South Africa, establishing one of Africa’s most competitive and commercially successful football leagues.
Three decades of football excellence
Over the past three decades, the Premier Soccer League has become synonymous with elite football, producing world-class players, championship-winning coaches and unforgettable moments that have captivated millions of supporters across the country.
From nurturing emerging talent to showcasing fierce rivalries between South Africa’s biggest clubs, the league has played a central role in elevating the standard of domestic football while strengthening the country’s sporting legacy.
The 2026/27 season also represents Betway’s third year as title sponsor of the competition, a partnership that has focused on enhancing the supporter experience both inside and outside the stadium.
Rewarding the fans
One of the partnership’s biggest successes has been the popular S’bonise & Win campaign, which rewards supporters who proudly wear their club colours during televised Betway Premiership fixtures.
The initiative has helped create vibrant matchday atmospheres while contributing to increased attendance at league matches across the country.
Speaking at the season launch, Jason Shield, Head of Sponsorship at Betway, congratulated the PSL on reaching its historic milestone and announced an exciting enhancement to the fan rewards programme.
“Congratulations to the Premier Soccer League on reaching this remarkable 30-year milestone. Three decades of excellence is a significant achievement for South African football, and Betway is proud to be part of this historic celebration,” said Shield.
“Football belongs to the fans, so we want to recognise this occasion by increasing the S’bonise & Win prize to R30,000. It’s our way of celebrating the League’s rich history while rewarding the supporters whose passion and loyalty have helped shape it over the past 30 years.”
Bigger rewards in a milestone season
The campaign’s format remains unchanged for the new season, with weekly winners continuing to receive R10,000.
However, supporters who hold active Betway accounts will now see their winnings triple to R30,000, a special reward introduced to celebrate the PSL’s 30th anniversary.
Last season, active Betway account holders doubled their winnings from R10,000 to R20,000, making this year’s increase the biggest since the campaign’s inception.
Another thrilling campaign awaits
With the new season kicking off this weekend, football supporters can once again expect a campaign filled with intense rivalries, dramatic title races and outstanding individual performances.
All 16 Premiership clubs will begin their quest for league honours, with ambitions ranging from lifting the championship trophy to securing continental qualification and avoiding relegation.
The season promises another showcase of South Africa’s finest football talent while continuing to strengthen the league’s reputation as one of the continent’s premier sporting competitions.
Building a lasting legacy
As the Premier Soccer League celebrates its 30th anniversary, the partnership with Betway continues to demonstrate a shared commitment to growing the game, strengthening fan engagement and creating memorable experiences for football supporters nationwide.
Through initiatives such as S’bonise & Win, investment in the league and continued collaboration with clubs and stakeholders, the PSL enters its milestone season with renewed momentum and optimism.
With anticipation building ahead of the opening fixtures, the 2026/27 Betway Premiership promises another unforgettable season as South African football celebrates its rich history while embracing an exciting future.
