Johannesburg — The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has called for swift justice and full transparency following the fatal shooting of a Nigerian national during an incident linked to Sizok’Thola, as the Gauteng Provincial Police intensify their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred during an operation connected to Sizok’Thola, a crime-prevention initiative that has drawn both public support and scrutiny for its methods. The deceased, identified as a Nigerian citizen, was fatally shot under circumstances that remain under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Gauteng police have confirmed that a case has been opened and that all relevant evidence, including ballistic reports, witness statements and video footage where available, is being examined.
In a strongly worded statement, NUSA expressed deep concern over the killing, describing it as “deeply troubling” and urging authorities to ensure accountability if any wrongdoing is established. The union emphasized that due process must prevail, regardless of the nature of the operation or allegations surrounding the incident.
“We condemn all forms of criminality, but we equally condemn the loss of life without due process,” NUSA said. “The rule of law must apply to everyone. A thorough, impartial investigation is essential to restore confidence and prevent further loss of life.”
The organisation further called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to closely monitor the case, citing the need for independent oversight whenever a fatal shooting occurs during a law-enforcement-related operation. Community leaders have echoed these sentiments, warning that unresolved incidents of this nature risk inflaming tensions between law enforcement and migrant communities.
Gauteng SAPS spokespersons have urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course, stressing that no conclusions should be drawn prematurely. Police have also appealed for anyone with information related to the incident to come forward, assuring witnesses of protection where necessary.
The shooting has reignited broader debate around community-led and multi-agency crime-fighting initiatives, particularly those that operate in volatile environments. While Sizok’Thola has been credited in some quarters with addressing serious crime, critics argue that clear operational boundaries and strict adherence to legal protocols are essential to prevent abuses.
As the investigation continues, NUSA has called for calm within affected communities while reiterating its demand for justice. “This is not only about one life lost,” the union said. “It is about ensuring that human rights, dignity, and the law are upheld for all who live in South Africa.”
