DURBAN, 18 OCTOBER 2026 β Ryan Mphahlele will return to the Durban beachfront on Sunday with unfinished business and a title to defend when he lines up in the elite menβs race at the 2026 Boxer Super Run.
The South African long-distance runner enjoyed a memorable 2025 campaign, winning both the Durban and Johannesburg legs of the Boxer Super Run circuit. Now, he is back in Durban to tackle the fast 5km course once again β although he admits he arrives at this yearβs race in a very different place physically.
Mphahlele, a Tembisa resident and strong supporter of the event, is relishing the opportunity to test himself against a competitive elite field.
βWhenever I line up at a race, I want to win,β admits Mphahlele. βBut my fitness isnβt anywhere near where it was at this time last year. Iβll definitely compete for the win, but Iβll also use the race to see where my fitness is now and how I compare with the other athletes.β
Champion returns to a course he loves
Mphahlele has developed a particular liking for the Durban route, describing the course as fast and flat β characteristics that should again lend themselves to an aggressive and tactical 5km.
His victory last year, however, was anything but straightforward.
Reflecting on that performance, the defending champion says it reinforced the need for confidence without losing respect for the opposition.
βThe standard was already very high, and the win didnβt come easily. I had to fight all the way to the finish, so Iβm expecting even tougher competition this year.β
Mphahlele expects the tactical battle to resemble last yearβs contest, with the pace likely to be fierce from the outset.
βI enjoy the fast, flat course and expect the tactics to be similar to last year,β he says.
For spectators, that could make for another dramatic edition of the elite race, with the action also being relayed on the big screen for crowds at the venue.
Prize money adds further incentive
While defending his title remains a major motivation, the attractive prize purse adds another layer of intrigue to what is expected to be a fiercely contested elite race.
With Mphahlele openly acknowledging that he is not yet at last yearβs fitness level, his performance could provide a useful benchmark as he assesses his progress and measures himself against a quality field.
Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer believes that combination of honesty, competitiveness and experience makes Mphahleleβs return particularly compelling.
βRyan knows what it takes to win on this course, having produced a hard-fought performance last year, but he is also honest about where he is in his preparation,β says Meyer.
βThat makes his return particularly interesting. With Ryan lining up alongside a strong field of elite athletes, we can expect another fast and fiercely contested race.β

Durban ready for another running spectacle
For Boxer Superstores, Mphahleleβs return adds star power to an event built around making 5km road running accessible to everyone β from elite athletes to social runners, schools, clubs and newcomers.
Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores, says the defending championβs presence will add to the excitement on race day.
βWeβre excited to welcome Ryan back to the Boxer Super Run Durban,β says Pillay.
βHe brings a competitive edge to the event, but he also represents what the Boxer Super Run is about β giving runners the opportunity to challenge themselves, enjoy the experience and be part of something special.β
A 5km race for everyone
The Durban event, which is already sold out, will take place along the cityβs scenic promenade, starting at Snell Parade near Blue Lagoon Park and finishing at Blue Lagoon Park.
The event offers a range of participation options, beginning with the open wave at 07:00, followed by the Super Social Wave from 08:00 to 09:30, before the elite womenβs race at 09:45 and the elite menβs showdown at 10:00.
Participants receive an event performance T-shirt, goodie bag, race number and timing chip, a route experience and a finisherβs medal.
The Boxer Super Run will return to Johannesburg on Sunday, 15 November 2026, with entries also sold out.
But before the series heads to Gauteng, the spotlight belongs to Durban β and to a defending champion determined to see exactly where he stands.
Mphahlele may concede that he is not yet where he was a year ago, but his competitive instinct remains unchanged.
On Sunday, the champion will once again stand on the start line β and over 5km, the difference between defending the crown and surrendering it could come down to the final few metres.
