The City of Gold came alive with speed, energy, and community spirit as the inaugural Boxer Super Run Joburg took over Marks Park Sports Club on Sunday. Following their golden runs in Durban earlier this year, Ryan Mphahlele and Glenrose Xaba once again ruled the roads — claiming victory in the men’s and women’s elite 5km races with powerful, commanding performances.

Mphahlele Masters the Men’s Race

In the Elite Men’s Wave, Mphahlele produced an explosive run, crossing the finish line in 14 minutes and 20 seconds on a challenging course. He was followed closely by Bennett Seloyi in second and Musawenkosi Mnisi in third.

“The plan was to go hard from the start and hold the pace,” said Mphahlele after his win. “Musawenkosi really pushed me on the hills — he was strong and kept me sharp. I had to sprint near the end because Bennett was closing fast. This race had everything — competition, community, and spirit.”

Reflecting on the event’s inclusivity, Mphahlele added,

“What I love about the Boxer Super Run is that it’s not just for elites. The social waves bring people together. It’s about movement, fun, and unity. I’ll definitely be back next year.”

Xaba Completes a Historic Hat-Trick

In the Elite Women’s Wave, Glenrose Xaba once again delivered a statement performance — winning in 16 minutes and 14 seconds, her third straight debut victory on the Boxer Super Run circuit following Durban (2023) and Tshwane (2024).

Neheng Khatala and Karabo More finished second and third respectively, rounding out a fiercely competitive field.

“It was a tough race — from 2km to 4km it really tested us,” said Xaba. “The course was hilly, but I stayed focused. My goal was to test my preparation for the Valencia Marathon, and this run showed I’m in great shape. To win all three city debuts — Durban, Tshwane, and now Joburg — is a dream come true.”

Xaba’s trademark humility shone through as she added,

“Every runner is my competition, and I never take that lightly. I’m proud of my performance and grateful to Boxer for creating such an inspiring platform for all athletes.”

A Festival of Fitness and Fun

The Boxer Super Run Joburg catered to every level of runner — from elite athletes to social enthusiasts and young kids taking their first strides. Participants chose from five start waves, including:

  • Elite Men & Women Waves for invited top-tier athletes
  • Open Wave for club and competitive runners
  • Super Social Wave for fun groups and teams
  • 1km Kids Wave to inspire the next generation

The event’s vibrant mix of fitness, music, and entertainment turned Marks Park into a festival of movement and community spirit.

Organisers and Sponsors Celebrate a Triumphant Debut

“The debut of the Boxer Super Run in Johannesburg was an incredible success,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Ryan and Glenrose embodied what this event stands for — excellence, community, and joy in motion. We’re proud of every runner who made this first Joburg edition so memorable.”

Echoing his sentiments, Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Department: Marketing at Boxer Superstores, praised the event’s vibrant atmosphere:

“Bringing the Boxer Super Run to Johannesburg for the first time has been an absolute thrill. This event captures everything our brand stands for — community, energy, and togetherness. Congratulations to all our winners, and a huge thank you to every participant who brought the Jozi spirit to life. The energy was electric — we can’t wait for next year!”

Prize Purse and Recognition

The Boxer Super Run Joburg boasted an impressive R147,200 prize purse, shared between the Elite Race and Open Wave categories.

  • The Elite Men’s and Women’s champions each took home R20,000,
  • While the top eight finishers in both categories earned prize money.
  • In the Open Wave, the top three men and women across six age categories — from Juniors to 70+ — were also rewarded for their performances.
