KALKSTEENFONTEIN PRIMARY SCHOOL TO RECEIVE LITERACY BOOST FROM DR BOOST FROM DR GCINA MHLOPHE THIS MANDELA MONTH

As South Africa turns its focus toward remembering the legacy of Nelson Mandela this week, Kalksteenfontein Primary School stands poised to become the champion of a significant literacy intervention. In an inspiring initiative, education non-profit Funda Wande is teaming up with the school to usher in an era of reading and storytelling magic, featuring none other than iconic South African author and performer, Dr. Gcina Mhlophe.

The much-anticipated event will unfold on Friday, 25 July 2025, just as learners are welcomed back from their holidays. It is a special Mandela Month activation designed not merely to commemorate his legacy, but to ignite a lifelong passion for reading among students.

“We want the impact of Mandela Day to live far beyond one day,” says Ambeswa Mgandela, Communications & Advocacy Officer at Funda Wande. “By welcoming learners back with the joy of books and storytelling, we’re helping them fall in love with reading for the long term.”

Honouring Mandela Through Literacy

Dr. Mhlophe’s performance serves as a powerful reminder of Mandela’s belief in the transformative power of education. Her storytelling session will specifically target learners from Grade R to Grade 3, aiming to inspire and motivate young readers at a pivotal stage in their development.

This initiative will feature not just delightful stories but also significant contributions to the school’s literacy resources. Age-appropriate books, soft mats for reading, and custom shelving will be provided, establishing sustainable reading corners within select classrooms.

“We’re not just creating inspiration — we’re creating real spaces where reading can thrive,” Mgandela emphasises, highlighting the long-term vision behind Funda Wande’s efforts.

Why It Matters

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Recent studies indicate that over 80% of South African Grade 4 learners struggle to read for meaning. This staggering statistic sheds light on the urgent need for interventions that can positively influence literacy rates in the country. Funda Wande’s mission is to change this narrative, one classroom at a time, by collaborating with schools and communities to build foundational reading skills.

This Mandela Day-inspired endeavour marries the rich tradition of storytelling with evidence-based educational principles, ensuring learners receive both the inspiration and practical tools needed for literacy success.
