More than 20,000 festival-goers, 5,000 employment opportunities and over R35 million in projected economic activity put Johannesburg’s township culture firmly at the centre of the entertainment economy.

Johannesburg is gearing up for a major celebration of food, music, culture and township entrepreneurship when the Jozi Kota Festival takes over the Nasrec Expo Centre on Saturday, 3 October 2026.

Presented by Goldex Events and powered by Albany, the festival is expected to attract more than 20,000 people and generate over R35 million in economic activity, while creating more than 5,000 employment opportunities across the event ecosystem.

The scale of the festival points to a growing reality in South Africa’s entertainment landscape: major cultural events are increasingly becoming platforms not only for entertainment, but also for hospitality, tourism, entrepreneurship, retail and employment.

For Johannesburg, the impact is expected to extend well beyond the festival gates, with accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, fuel stations, retailers, tourism businesses and informal traders all positioned to benefit from increased visitor activity.

Where food culture meets live entertainment

At its heart, the Jozi Kota Festival is a celebration of one of South Africa’s most recognisable township food creations — the kota.

But the festival has evolved into something considerably bigger than a food event.

Visitors can expect a full-day entertainment and lifestyle experience combining kota vendors, live performances, DJs, brand activations, food, fashion, retail, family experiences and entrepreneurial showcases.

The event will be hosted by Somizi Mhlongo and Napo Modise, adding a strong entertainment dimension to a programme designed to appeal across generations.

For Goldex Events, the bigger ambition is to transform the festival experience into a sustainable economic platform where entertainment creates opportunities for people working across hospitality, production, security, logistics, catering, technical services, marketing, retail and the creative industries.

More than 5,000 opportunities behind the scenes

The projected employment figure reflects the extensive ecosystem required to stage a festival of this scale.

Opportunities are expected across event production and operations, hospitality and catering, food preparation and sales, logistics, transport, security, cleaning, waste management, brand activations, customer service, merchandise, technical production, marketing, media, vendor support and entertainment services.

Hundreds of people and businesses are also involved before and after festival day, from planning and construction to event breakdown.

This makes the festival an important case study in the economic multiplier effect of entertainment.

A single large-scale event can create a chain of spending that reaches workers, suppliers, entrepreneurs and hospitality businesses far beyond the venue itself.

The Kotapreneur takes centre stage

Small businesses remain central to the festival’s identity.

The marketplace will bring together kota vendors, food businesses, beverage suppliers, fashion brands, lifestyle entrepreneurs, craft traders and other SMMEs, giving them access to thousands of potential customers in a concentrated trading environment.

For many of these entrepreneurs, the value extends beyond a single day of sales.

The festival offers exposure, customer acquisition, brand awareness and opportunities to build relationships that could translate into longer-term commercial growth.

The festival’s Kotapreneur concept has become an important part of its identity — recognising entrepreneurs who have turned township food culture into viable businesses.

Albany leads a powerful brand partnership

As the festival’s headline sponsor, Albany is positioned at the centre of a platform that connects food, community, entrepreneurship and entertainment.

The partnership reflects the growing importance of brands using cultural experiences to engage consumers in environments where food, music and community intersect.

Albany’s involvement also reinforces the festival’s focus on the kota as more than a popular meal — but as a cultural and commercial symbol capable of creating opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country.

Capitec brings financial inclusion into the festival economy

Capitec, a key festival partner and official banking sponsor of the broader Kota Festival Tour, brings a financial-services dimension to the experience, particularly around township entrepreneurship and small-business participation.

The bank’s involvement is especially relevant to the festival’s emphasis on entrepreneurs and vendors.

Capitec says its Kota Festival partnership includes helping vendors accept card and phone payments, allowing businesses to transact more efficiently while reducing reliance on cash during busy festival days.

That makes the partnership part of the festival’s wider commercial ecosystem rather than simply a branding exercise.

Nyama Choma adds flavour to the food economy

Nyama Choma is another important partner contributing to the festival’s food and culinary proposition.

Its involvement strengthens the festival’s connection to food innovation and the broader ecosystem of businesses built around South Africa’s vibrant food culture.

Together with Albany and the festival’s network of vendors, the partnership helps position food as both an entertainment experience and an economic opportunity.

Daily Sun and Base Pulse extend the reach

Daily Sun and Base Pulse are also supporting partners, strengthening the festival’s ability to connect with audiences and communities around the country.

Their involvement adds further media and brand reach to an event seeking to build a national platform around township culture, entrepreneurship and entertainment.

The festival’s partner model demonstrates how entertainment properties can bring together food brands, financial services, media and lifestyle platforms around a shared cultural experience.

Government support reinforces the cultural economy

Goldex Events has also acknowledged the support and recognition of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, particularly its role in recognising the contribution of cultural and creative events to community development and economic participation.

The partnership between government, brands, communities and event organisers is increasingly important as South Africa seeks to build stronger cultural and creative economies.

The Jozi Kota Festival illustrates how food, music, arts, entertainment and entrepreneurship can converge in a single platform capable of generating both cultural value and economic activity.

From township favourite to cultural export

The festival forms part of the expanding Kota Festival Tour, whose broader ambition is captured in its rallying call: “Kota 2 The World.”

The vision is to take the kota beyond its established township roots and position it as a proudly South African cultural and economic export.

The festival will bring together vendors from different parts of the country, showcasing traditional flavours alongside contemporary interpretations of the iconic street food.

The marketplace will also provide space for fashion, lifestyle products, crafts, beverages and other locally produced goods.

Influencers, creators and the next generation of audiences

The 2026 tour is also expanding its digital footprint through the Kota Festival Influencer Tour Campaign.

Influencers are expected to travel across festival destinations, creating content, collaborating with brands and expanding their own platforms while amplifying the Kota Festival experience.

For the Jozi edition, the campaign is expected to attract influencers from across South Africa, as well as Eswatini and Lesotho.

It reflects the changing nature of entertainment marketing, where live events increasingly function as content ecosystems — generating experiences that continue across social media long after the final performance.

Wellness joins the festival conversation

The festival’s community focus also extends into wellness.

The Freshe Fun Walk, scheduled for 19 September 2026 at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, is designed to encourage learners, families and the wider community to embrace more active and healthier lifestyles.

The initiative adds another dimension to the festival brand, linking entertainment and culture with community wellbeing.

A festival with a bigger economic ambition

Xolani Machele, CEO of Goldex Events and the Kota Festival, said the objective is to demonstrate the economic power of bringing culture and entertainment together.

“The Jozi Kota Festival is about much more than putting people on a stage and selling tickets. We want people to see the economic power of a festival and the opportunities that can be created when thousands of people come together around culture.”

Machele said the projected 5,000-plus employment opportunities and more than R35 million in economic activity demonstrate what can happen when entertainment, tourism, entrepreneurship and culture operate together.

He also thanked the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, as well as Albany, Capitec, Nyama Choma, Daily Sun and Base Pulse for their contribution to the festival.

“Our vision is to build a festival platform that creates opportunities at every level — from the kota vendor selling their food, to the young person getting their first temporary job, to the artist performing on stage and the hotel welcoming visitors from outside Johannesburg,” he said.

Limba: “More than just a food and entertainment experience”

Luvo Limba said the 2026 programme is deliberately focused on creating opportunities beyond festival day.

“Kota Festival is more than just a food and entertainment experience. Through our 2026 tour, we are creating platforms for influencers, brands and communities to grow together while celebrating the culture and spirit of the Kota.”

With the festival tour continuing to expand nationally and into neighbouring countries, the organisers are positioning the kota as a vehicle for cultural pride, business development and tourism.

The road to 2027 is already mapped out

The festival has already announced an ambitious 2027 tour featuring 15 festivals across 15 destinations, including the East Rand, North West, Johannesburg, Mpumalanga, eThekwini, Limpopo, Vaal, Cape Town, Tembisa, Eswatini, Pretoria, Lesotho, Free State and the Eastern Cape.

The expansion underlines the organisers’ intention to build a long-term national cultural platform rather than a once-off entertainment property.

For Johannesburg, however, the immediate focus is 3 October.

With food at its core, music on the stage, brands engaging consumers, entrepreneurs trading, influencers creating content and hospitality businesses preparing for increased visitor traffic, the Jozi Kota Festival is shaping up as much more than a day out.

It is a showcase of how township culture can become entertainment, entertainment can become business, and business can create opportunity.
